Clarinet Quartet (Penderecki)
The Clarinet Quartet, also known as Quartet for Clarinet and String Trio, is a work for clarinet, violin, viola, and cello by Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki. It was finished in 1993. Composition and premiere This composition was dedicated to Ake Holmquist and premiered in Lübeck on August 13, 1993. For this performance, Israeli clarinetist Sharon Kam, German violinist Christoph Poppen, American violist Kim Kashkashian, and collaborator and Russian cellist Boris Piergamienszczikow played the work under the baton of Penderecki himself. These musicians also performed the piece to be broadcast in television, also with Penderecki as conductor. It was later published by Schott Music. Harry Kinross-White also wrote an arrangement of this composition for saxophone quartet in 1999. The first performance of this arrangement took place in the Dresden Days of Contemporary Music in 1999 by Raschèr Saxophone Quartet. The clarinet is a musical instrument in the woodwind family. The instrument has a nearly cylindrical bore and a flared bell, and uses a single reed to produce sound. Clarinets comprise a family of instruments of differing sizes and pitches. Martin Ostertag (born in 1943) is a German classical cellist and music educator. Life Born in Lörrach, Ostertag studied cello with Leo Koscielny at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe and with André Navarra in Paris. In 1967 he was a prizewinner of the international competition in Vienna, and in 1968/69 he won the national selection of the Deutscher Musikrat ''Konzert junger Künstler''. Ida Bieler (born 1950 in Virginia) is an American violinist and professor of Violin. Biography Bieler studied under Ruggiero Ricci at the North Carolina School of the Arts, Oscar Shumsky at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, Max Rostal in Cologne and Nathan Milstein in London. From 1982 to 1988 she was concertmaster of the Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne. Bieler has been a member of the Melos Quartet.
