Clarence E. Sutton
Clarence Edwin Sutton (February 18, 1871 – October 9, 1916) was a United States Marine Corps sergeant who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Boxer Rebellion. Biography Sutton was born in Urbanna, Virginia, on February 18, 1871, the oldest of four children of Thomas E. and Ellen Sutton. His father Thomas worked as a merchant. Sutton entered the Virginia Military Institute on August 18, 1885. He was forced to repeat his first year there, becoming a member of the class of 1890, and resigned from the school in 1888 before graduating. Sutton joined the Marine Corps from Washington, D.C. in June 1899, and served in the Philippine–American War. By July 13, 1900, he had reached the rank of sergeant and was serving in Tianjin (then known to Americans as "Tientsin"), China, in the midst of the Boxer Rebellion. Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington National Cemetery is one of two national cemeteries run by the United States Army. Nearly 400,000 people are buried in its 639 acres (259 ha) in Arlington, Virginia. The Boxer Movement, or Boxer Rebellion, was a Chinese uprising from November 1899 to September 7, 1901, against foreign influence in areas such as trade, politics, religion and technology that occurred in China during the final years of the Manchu rule (Qing dynasty). The members of the Chinese Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists were simply called ''boxers'' by the Westerners due to the martial arts and calisthenics they practiced. It began as an anti-foreign, anti-imperialist, peasant-based movement that attacked foreigners who were building railroads and violating Feng shui. Christians who they felt were responsible for foreign domination of China were also targeted. In June 1900, the Boxers invaded Beijing and killed 230 non-Chinese. Clarence E. Mathias (December 12, 1876 – December 9, 1935) was an American Sergeant Major serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Boxer Rebellion who received the Medal of Honor for bravery. Biography Mathias was born December 12, 1876, in Royalton, Pennsylvania, and after entering the Marine Corps he was sent as a private to China to fight in the Boxer Rebellion. He died December 9, 1935, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. James Cooney (July 27, 1860 – March 14, 1903) was an Irishman serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Boxer Rebellion who received the Medal of Honor for bravery. Biography Cooney was born July 27, 1860, in Limerick, Ireland, and enlisted into the Marine Corps August 19, 1889. After entering the Marine Corps he was sent to fight in the Chinese Boxer Rebellion. He received his Medal for his actions in Tianjin, China July 13, 1900. The Medal was presented to him January 24, 1902. He died March 14, 1903, in Vallejo, California. Harry Chapman Adriance (October 27, 1864 – January 25, 1934) was a United States marine who received the Medal of Honor for his "distinguished conduct in the presence of the enemy in battle near Tientsin, China" on July 13, 1900, during the Boxer Rebellion. Biography Adriance was born on October 27, 1864, in Oswego, New York. At the age of 33, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 15, 1898. He served at Marine Barracks, New York Navy Yard, and then was transferred to the U.S. Naval Base, Cavite, Philippine Islands, arriving there on September 21, 1899. He was among the marines sent to the city of Tientsin on June 29, 1900, at the outbreak of hostilities by the Boxers in China.
