Cladonia Asahinae
''Cladonia asahinae'', the pixie cup lichen or Asahina's cup lichen, is a species of cup lichen in the family Cladoniaceae. ''C. asahinae'' occurs in Europe, North America, southern South America, and the Antarctic. It typically grows in high moisture environments in soil rich in humus or on dead wood. Taxonomy The species was first named and formally described by John Walter Thomson in 1969. The species epithet ''asahinae'' honors the Japanese chemist and lichenologist Yasuhiko Asahina, a significant contributor to the study of the chemotaxonomy of genus ''Cladonia''. ''Cladonia asahinae'' is a member of the ''Cladonia chlorophaea'' species complex. In North America, one vernacular name used for the species is "pixie-cup lichen". Spot Test (lichen)
A spot test in lichenology is a spot analysis used to help identify lichens. It is performed by placing a drop of a chemical on different parts of the lichen and noting the colour change (or lack thereof) associated with application of the chemical. The tests are routinely encountered in dichotomous keys for lichen species, and they take advantage of the wide array of lichen products produced by lichens and their uniqueness among taxa. As such, spot tests reveal the presence or absence of chemicals in various parts of a lichen. They were first proposed by the botanist William Nylander in 1866. Three common spot tests use either 10% aqueous KOH solution (K test), saturated aqueous solution of bleaching powder or calcium hypochlorite (C test), or 5% alcoholic ''p''-phenylenediamine solution (P test). ''Cladonia furcata'' or the many-forked cup lichen is a species of cup lichen in the family Cladoniaceae. It has an intermediate to tolerant air pollution sensitivity. Extracts of this species have been shown to kill leukemia cells in vitro, and may have possible value in the treatment of cancer. Description Like other lichens in the genus ''Cladonia'', the fruiting body of ''C. furcata'' is made of a flattened primary thallus and a secondary upright stalk that forms the secondary thallus.
