City Of Hawthorn
The City of Hawthorn was a local government area about east of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia, on the southeast bank of the Yarra River. The city covered an area of , and existed from 1860 until 1994. History Hawthorn was incorporated as a municipal district on 27 July 1860. It was proclaimed as a town on 18 March 1887, and a city on 12 September 1890. Accessed at State Library of Victoria, La Trobe Reading Room. On 22 June 1994, the City of Hawthorn was abolished, and along with the Cities of Camberwell and Kew, was merged into the newly created City of Boroondara. The facility is still used by the City of Boroondara as a regional arts centre. Located in Melbourne, it was established in 1854 as the Melbourne Public Library, making it Australia's oldest public library and one of the first free libraries in the world. Burke Road is a major north–south thoroughfare in Melbourne, Australia. It runs from Ivanhoe East to Caulfield East and through the major shopping district at Camberwell. CityLink
CityLink is a network of tollways in Melbourne, Australia, linking the Tullamarine, West Gate and Monash Freeways and incorporating Bolte Bridge, Burnley Tunnel and other works. In 1996, Transurban was awarded the contract to augment two existing freeways and construct two new toll roads – labelled the Western and Southern Links– directly linking a number of existing freeways to provide a continuous, high-capacity road route to, and around, the central business district. CityLink uses a free-flow tolling electronic toll collection system, called e-TAG. CityLink is currently maintained by Lendlease Services. Gardiners Creek
Gardiners Creek, originally known as Kooyongkoot Creek, is a waterway in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and part of the Yarra River catchment. In a few sparse locations remnant riparian bushland survives, however the majority of its length has been heavily urbanised, and the creek has been degraded in much the same way as other Melbourne eastern suburban waterways such as the Mullum Mullum Creek and Koonung Creek. The Gardiners Creek Trail follows the creek for most of its length. Naming The creek's original name was ''Kooyongkoot'', from the Woiwurrung language of the indigenous Australian Wurundjeri-Baluk group, which translates to 'haunt of the waterfowl'. This name appeared on early maps such as the 1840 Thomas map. The creek's current name was given in honour of early Melbourne land speculator and banker, John Gardiner, who settled near the junction of Kooyongkoot Creek and the Yarra River in 1836. Glen Iris is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Cities of Boroondara and Stonnington local government areas. Glen Iris recorded a population of 26,131 at the 2021 census. Glen Iris has been Melbourne's geographical centre of population since the 1990s. History Captain Thomas Henderson, of the Royal Navy, arrived in Melbourne on a ship called ''Iris'' in 1850. Hawthorn East is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, east of the Melbourne central business district, located within the City of Boroondara local government area. Hawthorn East recorded a population of 14,834 at the 2021 census. Hawthorn Town Hall
The Hawthorn Arts Centre (formerly the Hawthorn Town Hall) is a former civic building located in Hawthorn, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Designed by architect John Beswicke in the Second Empire style, the hall was built from 1888 to 1890 and housed the council chambers for the City of Hawthorn. After the City of Hawthorn was dissolved in 1994 and absorbed into the newly created City of Boroondara, the building was used as a library, museum and gallery space. A $17.9 million redevelopment was commenced in April 2012 to convert the former town hall into a regional arts space.
