City Hotel (Reedsburg, Wisconsin)
Beastro & Barley, formerly Touchdown Tavern, Town Club Bar or Roper's City Hotel, is a restaurant and bar in a historic hotel building in the Second Empire style at 125 East Main Street in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, United States. The two-storey red brick structure with stone trim and a mansard roof was designed by Edward M. Hackett and constructed in 1886 for $10,000. It includes arched window frames, brick detailing on the facade and a small porch with ornamental metal balustrade on the second floor. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places for Wisconsin in 1984. The PDF file for this National Register record has not yet been digitized. It was built by the Reedsburg Building & Lumber Co. The building now houses the Beastro & Barley restaurant and bar downstairs and a single large apartment upstairs. Reedsburg is a city in Sauk County, Wisconsin, United States. Located along the Baraboo River, it was founded in 1868, and was named for early settler David C. Reed. The city is surrounded by the Town of Reedsburg. It is part of the Baraboo Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Early settlement Early settlers came to this area due to the abundance of natural resources, especially lumber. In 1844, the first copper mine was established in this area, but it was soon abandoned. James W. Babb and his wife Rebecca Scarff Babb are the earliest recorded settlers, having brought their family to Wisconsin from Ohio in 1845. At a place 55 miles northeast of Mineral Point (the capital of Wisconsin Territory), long identified by the Winnebago who inhabited these lands as a convenient place to cross the Baraboo River, Babb left a flat-bottomed boat to help move supplies. Main Street Commercial Historic District is a historic district in Reedsburg, Wisconsin that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It was listed alongside the Park Street Historic District. The district consists of 21 commercial buildings. Eighteen of the buildings are brick and three are of stone construction. with (see photo location key page 11 of text document) History Early history Main Street began as "Shanty Row", consisting of five tamarack shanties built in 1850. Over the next 10 years, the shanties were either destroyed or removed, and Main Street took their place. The Chicago & North Western Railway (C&NW) arrived in 1872, bringing with it many businesses and industries. Fermentation Fest
Fermentation Fest is a 10-day celebration of farming, food, and art in Reedsburg, and Sauk County, Wisconsin. It was established in 2010 based on a Smithsonian Institution travelling exhibit titled "Key Ingredients: America by Food" and includes classes, the Farm/Art DTour, which is a self-guided driving tour on 50 miles of Wisconsin backroads including signposts, art installations, market stands and live performances.
