Gheorghe Ciobanu
Gheorghe Ciobanu (February 4, 1909 — June 29, 1995) was a Romanian ethnomusicologist and Byzantine specialist. He published several important papers on early Romanian psalm music and Romanian folklore. The musicologist Viorel Cosma, wrote that Ciobanu's "studies of Romanian folklore did much to solve questions about popular modes and methods of versification, and contributed greatly to the history of folk collections and popular music." He was awarded the Romanian Composers' Union prize five times (1969, 1974, 1977, 1979, 1987), and was twice awarded the prize of the Romanian Academy (1957, 1978). Ilarion Ciobanu (; 28 October 1931 – 7 September 2008) was a Romanian actor. He has been described as "a legend" in the press and the last true Romanian comic. Biography Ciobanu was born in Ciucur, Tighina County, Kingdom of Romania (now Moldova), in a family with six brothers. When he was 8, his father, Vlase, a longshoreman in the Port of Constanța, died in an accident. His mother, Olga, moved to Constanța, where she had to work as a cook at a hospital to support her children, two of whom would die due to illness. From age 12, Ciobanu held a variety of jobs: he worked as a longshoreman, farmer, tractor driver, miner, digger, carpenter, sailor, and fisherman. Ion Constantin Ciobanu (6 November 1927 – 19 January 2001) was a writer and politician from Moldova. He served as the head of the Moldovan Writers' Union (1961–1965). Biography Ion C. Ciobanu was born on 6 November 1927 in Budăi village (nowadays TeleneÅŸti district), in a peasant family. He graduated from the Orhei Pedagogical High School, and then, in 1959 the higher literary courses of the Writers’ Union of the USSR. Maia Ciobanu (born 5 May 1952) is a Romanian composer and music educator. She is also the author of books, studies and papers on music. Early years Maia Ciobanu was born in Bucharest and studied at the Conservatory Ciprian Porumbescu. She studied composition with Dan Constantinescu and Myriam Marbe and piano with Aurora Ienei, and also studied with Ştefan Niculescu, Mircea Chiriac, Liviu Comes and Aurel Stroe. Mihaela Ciobanu (born 30 January 1973 in Bucharest) is a retired Romanian people, Romanian-born Spanish team handball, handball goalkeeper, who played on the Spain women's national handball team, Spanish women's national team. She was part of the Spanish team at the 2008 European Women's Handball Championship, where the Spanish team reached the final, after defeating Germany women's national handball team, Germany in the semifinal.
