Cindy Shih
Cindy Shih (born 1982) is a Taiwanese-born American visual artist. Her work is strongly rooted in traditional techniques and principles, including Chinese literati painting, Venetian plasterwork, landscape painting, and realism, although producing thoroughly modern pieces. One of her prominent themes is exploring her personal narrative in a broad context. She lives in San Francisco, California. Early life Shih was born in Taiwan and immigrated to Los Angeles at the age of three. She describes her family as a "model immigrant Chinese family" who encouraged her to be independent and free-thinking, but also wanted for her the usual hallmarks of traditional success, such as marriage and assimilation. She holds a BA degree in Communication Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Taiwanese Art
The artistic heritage of Taiwan is extremely diverse with multiple major influences and periods. History Stonecutters of the Changbin culture began to make art on Taiwan at least 30,000 years ago. Around 5,000 years ago jade and earthenware works started to appear. Between 4000 BC and 2000 BC people in what is now Hualien produced and traded valuable jade ornaments and jewelry. The Dapenkeng culture developed a unique style of pottery. For centuries much of the art produced was religious with highly decorated temples being the beneficiaries of local wealth and education. Art was first institutionalized in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period with the establishment of public schools dedicated to the fine arts. The Japanese introduced oil and watercolor paintings to Taiwan and Taiwanese artists were heavily influenced by their Japanese counterparts. ArtSpan
ArtSpan is a San Francisco, California, nonprofit organization that produces the oldest and largest artist open studios event in the United States. Started in 1975, ArtSpan's San Francisco Open Studios (SFOS) takes place over four weekends in the fall each year with a different city district highlighted each weekend. The Open Studios take place in a myriad of different locations within each district. Some are in art galleries, some in apartments, some in garages and some in store fronts. Local publications often make recommendations for each weekend. In 2023, over 600 local artists participated in SFOS. 50th Anniversary In 2024, San Francisco Open Studios celebrated its 50th anniversary. 2016 Oakland Warehouse Fire
The Ghost Ship warehouse fire was a fire that occurred in a former warehouse in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland, California, that had been converted into an artist collective with living spaces. The fire occurred on December 2, 2016, at approximately 11:20 p.m. PST. At the time, the warehouse was hosting a concert featuring artists from the house music record label 100% Silk. The warehouse was only zoned for industrial purposes and residential and entertainment uses were illegal. Of the 80 to 100 people attending the concert, 36 were killed, making it the deadliest fire in the history of Oakland. Art Center College of Design (stylized as ArtCenter College of Design) is a private art college in Pasadena, California. History ArtCenter College of Design was founded in 1930 in downtown Los Angeles as the Art Center School. In 1935, Fred R. Archer founded the photography department, and Ansel Adams was a guest instructor in the late 1930s. During and after World War II, ArtCenter ran a technical illustration program in conjunction with the California Institute of Technology. In 1947, the post-war boom in students caused the school to expand to a larger location in the building of the former Cumnock School for Girls in the Hancock Park neighborhood, while still maintaining a presence at its original downtown location.
