Cibola County
Cibola County is a county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the population was 27,213. Its county seat is Grants. It is New Mexico's youngest county, and the third youngest county in the United States, created on June 19, 1981, from the westernmost four-fifths of the formerly much larger Valencia County. Cibola County comprises the Grants, New Mexico Micropolitan Statistical Area. The county is a rich mining area with numerous Uranium mines. Quivira
Quivira is a place named by Spanish conquistador Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1541, for the mythical Seven Cities of Gold that he never found. Quivira was a province of the ancestral Wichita people, located near the Great Bend of the Arkansas River in central Kansas, The exact site may be near present-day Lyons extending northeast to Salina. The Wichita city of Etzanoa, which flourished between 1450 and 1700, is likely part of Quivira. Expedition In 1540, Spaniard Francisco Vásquez de Coronado led a large expedition north from Mexico to search for wealth and the Seven Cities of Cibola. Instead of wealth, he found Indigenous farmers living in an array of communities and villages in what are today Arizona and New Mexico. These were the Hopi, Zuni, Rio Grande Pueblo, Apache, and Navajo peoples. Quemado Independent Schools
Quemado Independent Schools (Independent School District 2) is a school district headquartered in Quemado, New Mexico, U.S. Shelby Perea of the ''Albuquerque Journal'' described the district, located in a rural area, as being "small". In Catron County the district includes Quemado, Datil, Escudilla Bonita, Homestead, Pie Town, and some areas held by the Zuni Reservation. Additionally the district serves a portion of Cibola County, including Fence Lake. History Joe McDee was superintendent until 1965, when Herman D. Harm of Marsing, Idaho replaced him. In 2019 superintendent David Lackey stated that the district was unable to use New Mexico's school safety funding due to the conditions involved in the funding. Grants/Cibola County Schools is a school district based in Grants, New Mexico, United States. Attendance area GCCS's attendance boundary includes most of Cibola County, New Mexico, including the city of Grants. Exceptions are areas on the Zuni Reservation and Fence Lake. While the Ramah Navajo Indian Reservation is physically within Grants/Cibola County Schools, children going to non-tribal public schools are bussed to Ramah's schools, which are operated by the Gallup-McKinley County Schools.
