Churston
Churston Ferrers is an area and former civil parish, in the borough of Torbay, Devon, England, situated between the south coast towns of Paignton and Brixham. Today it is administered by local government as the Churston-with-Galmpton ward of the Torbay unitary authority. It contains the coastal village of ''Churston'', the now larger village of Galmpton and the Broadsands area. The place-name 'Churston Ferrers' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as ''Cercetone'', meaning 'church town or settlement'. The manor was held by Hugh de Fereris in 1303, according to ''Feudal Aids'' records, giving the second part of the name. Churston residents tend to associate mostly with Brixham, though those in the northern part of the Churston-with-Galmpton ward often think of themselves as part of Paignton. Churston Court
Churston Court is the manor house of the former Manorialism, manor of Churston Ferrers (anciently ''Cercetone'' (Domesday Book, 1086), ''Churecheton'' (Book of Fees, 13th c.), ''Churchstow'', ''Churchton'', ''Churchston'', etc.), near Brixham in Devon and is a Grade II* listed building. Description Today, the building serves as a hotel known as the Churston Court Inn. It is located immediately to the west of the parish church of Churston Ferrers, also next to the former Demesne, home farm, and about 1/2 mile south of the coastline at Elberry Cove, which intervening ground now forms part of Churston Golf Course. It retains its original staircases, stone windows, oak panelling and flagstone floors. The hotel has 19 en-suite rooms with four-poster beds and is said to be haunted by the ghost of a monk who appears in the old kitchen. Lupton, Churston Ferrers
Lupton is an historic manor in the parish of Brixham, Devon. The surviving manor house known as Lupton House, is a Palladian Country house built by Charles II Hayne (1747–1821),Pevsner, Nikolaus & Cherry, Bridget, ''The Buildings of England: Devon, London'', 2004, pp. 829, 833 Sheriff of Devon in 1772 and Colonel of the North Devon Militia. It received a Grade II* listing in 1949. The park and gardens are Grade II* listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. At some time before 1792 it was sold by Charles II Hayne, who had only lived in his new house for about twenty years, to the judge Sir Francis Buller, 1st Baronet (1746–1800), of nearby Churston Court, which he let to a tenant. Baron Churston
Baron Churston, of Churston Ferrers and Lupton in the County of Devon, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1858 for the former Conservative Member of Parliament, Sir John Yarde, 3rd Baronet. He had earlier represented South Devon in the House of Commons. Two years later, in 1860, he assumed by Royal licence the additional surname of Buller. the titles are held by his great-great-great-grandson, the fifth Baron, who succeeded his father in 1991. The Baronetcy, of Lupton House in the County of Devon, was created in the Baronetage of Great Britain on 13 January 1790 for the lawyer Sir Francis Buller. He was the son of James Buller. Paignton And Dartmouth Steam Railway
The Dartmouth Steam Railway, formerly known as the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway, is a heritage railway on the former Great Western Railway branch line between and in Devon, England. Much of the railway's business is from summer tourists from the resorts of Torbay, who travel to Kingswear, where the Dartmouth Passenger Ferry takes them across the River Dart to Dartmouth. The line is owned and operated by Dart Valley Railway Limited. This company also owns Dart Pleasure Craft Limited, which operates the Dartmouth Passenger Ferry as well as river and coastal cruises. Churston Ferrers Grammar School (also known as CFGS) is a selective coeducational Grammar School with Academy status, situated in the village of Galmpton in Torbay, South Devon, England. It is also a specialist Humanities College. Year 7 annual intake is approximately 130 pupils. History The school was founded in 1957 and accommodated around 350 pupils, drawn from the surrounding areas including those of the schools it replaced and as far afield as Totnes. Churston Railway Station
Churston railway station is on the Dartmouth Steam Railway, a heritage railway in Torbay, Devon, England. It is situated beside the main road to Brixham and close to the villages of Churston Ferrers and Galmpton. There has been no scheduled service at the station since 2020. History Before preservation The Dartmouth and Torbay Railway from Paignton railway station to Churston was opened for passengers on 14 March 1861 and for goods traffic on 1 April 1861. The station was known as Brixham Road at the time, and the line was extended to Kingswear railway station on 16 August 1864. The initial single platform was supplemented by a second in 1865. Galmpton, Torbay
Galmpton is a semi-rural village in Torbay, in the ceremonial county of Devon, England. It is located in the ward of Churston-with-Galmpton and the historic civil parish of Churston Ferrers, though some areas historically considered parts of Galmpton, such as Greenway and Galmpton Creek, are situated in the Devon borough of South Hams. Galmpton is bordered to the south and west by a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in the Kingswear parish. Broadsands
Broadsands is a beach on the coast of Torbay in South Devon, England. It is also the name of an area of housing inland from the beach, in the Churston Ferrers part of Torbay between Paignton and Brixham. It is a tourist attraction, with a range of facilities and a large pitch and putt course on the adjacent headland. The beach is popular for fishing and watersports. Brixham
Brixham is a coastal town and civil parish, the smallest and southernmost of the three main population centres (the others being Paignton and Torquay) on the coast of Torbay in the county of Devon, in the south-west of England.
