Bulawayo
Bulawayo (, ; Ndebele: ''Bulawayo'') is the second largest city in Zimbabwe, and the largest city in the country's Matabeleland region. The city's population is disputed; the 2022 census listed it at 665,940, while the Bulawayo City Council claimed it to be about 1.2 million. Bulawayo covers an area of about in the western part of the country, along the Matsheumhlope River. Along with the capital Harare, Bulawayo is one of two cities in Zimbabwe that is also a province. Bulawayo was founded by a group led by Gundwane Ndiweni around 1840 as the kraal of Mzilikazi, the Ndebele king and was known as Gibixhegu. His son, Lobengula, succeeded him in the 1860s, and changed the name to kobulawayo and ruled from Bulawayo until 1893, when the settlement was captured by British South Africa Company soldiers during the First Matabele War. Tony Johnstone
Anthony Alastair Johnstone (born 2 May 1956) is a Zimbabwean professional golfer. Early life Johnstone was born in Bulawayo, Rhodesia. He attended Christian Brothers College. Professional career In 1979, Johnstone turned professional and has spent his career playing mainly on the Southern African Tour and the European Tour. He won six times in Europe and finished a career best seventh on the European Tour Order of Merit in 1992. His most prestigious win came at the 1992 British PGA Championship. He won seventeen times on the Southern African Tour and topped the tour's Order of Merit in 1988–89 and 1993–94. He has represented Zimbabwe in international competition many times. The Association of Trust Schools (ATS) is an organisation of independent primary and secondary schools in Zimbabwe that was founded in 1962. Each of these schools are run by their own Board of Governors and are not for profit entities. The Heads of ATS schools are eligible for membership in the CHISZ. There are 66 schools in the ATS. History In 1962 CHISZ was formed with nine member headmasters: those of Arundel, Bishopslea, Chisipite, Eagle, Falcon, Peterhouse, St. Peter's, Springvale, Whitestone and Bernard Mizeki College. Their purpose was mutual support and encouragement. By the mid-1970s, twenty-four schools attended the Conference. A dip then followed leading up to independence with only nine members attending in 1981. John Eppel
John Eppel was born in Lydenburg, South Africa. He moved to Colleen Bawn, a small mining town in the south of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), at the age of four. He was educated at Milton High School in Bulawayo, and later attended the University of Natal in South Africa, where he completed his English master's degree in 'A Study of Keatsian Dialectics'. He married at the age of 34 and has three children; Ben, Ruth and Joe. His ex-wife, Shari, is a poet and prominent human rights activist. Eppel teaches English at Christian Brothers College, Bulawayo. He has published 20 books, one of which has been translated into French (The giraffe man), created a creative writing course for the University of South Africa and published three 'O'Level and one 'A' Level literature study guides. Michael Patrick Williams (born 4 November 1991, in Bulawayo) is a Zimbabwean rugby player. He previously played for Leicester Tigers, Exeter Chiefs and Bath in Premiership Rugby, and for Worcester Warriors in the RFU Championship. Denis Streak
Denis Hilton Streak (born 21 June 1949) is a Zimbabwean former first-class cricketer and the father of former Zimbabwean cricketer, Heath Streak. Apart from playing cricket, he also represented Zimbabwe at lawn bowls. He debuted for Rhodesia during the 1976-77 Currie Cup and toured England in 1985. Streak played domestic cricket with Matabeleland and was 46 when he finally retired. He finished by playing in a Logan Cup final win, in the same side at his son. Daniel Westcar Rowland (born 3 May 1984) is a Zimbabwean long-distance trail runner. He competes in ultra marathons and multi-day stage races around the world. Early life and education Rowland was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe on 3 May 1984. He attended Whitestone School and Christian Brothers College, Bulawayo (St Patrick's).
