Christel Dillbohner
Christel Dillbohner (born 1956) is a German artist whose installations, paintings, and assemblages are deeply involved with the relationship between personal and cultural memory and the human struggle to live in threatened environments. Biography Christel Dillbohner was born in Cologne, Germany, where she studied art at the Cologne Art School (Kölner Werkschulen), receiving her degree in 1984. Since the mid-1980s, she has lived principally in the United States, first in Los Angeles, California (1986 to 1996), and subsequently in the San Francisco Bay Area. Dillbohner's principal media are painting, installation, and assemblage. Field research is a central part of her artistic process and has taken her to Japan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Great Britain, New Zealand, and Australia. Her emphasis on art as a transformational undertaking, as well as her use of highly tactile materials such as wax, tar, silk cocoons, and old wood, show the influence on her work of Joseph Beuys. Berkeley Art Center (BAC) is a nonprofit arts organization, community art space, and gallery founded in 1967 and located at 1275 Walnut Street in Live Oak Park, Berkeley, California. History The Berkeley Art Center building was built by the Berkeley Rotary Club, and the Arts and Crafts-style building was designed by architect Robert W. Ratcliff. It was formally named the Berkeley Rotary Art Club. The Monterey Museum of Art (MMA) an art museum located in Monterey, California. It was founded in 1959 as a chapter of the American Federation of Arts. The Monterey Museum of Art collects, preserves, and interprets the art of California from the nineteenth century to the present day. Notable holdings celebrate the heritage of Northern and Central California, and especially for early California images from the Carmel Art Colony. The ''Kölner Werkschulen'' (Cologne Academy of Fine and Applied Arts), formerly Cologne Art and Craft Schools, was a university in Cologne training artists in visual arts, architecture and design from 1926 to 1971. History Origins The origins of the Kölner Werkschulen can be found in the Sunday school established by the painter Egidius Mengelberg in 1822 at the Jesuit buildings. This was incorporated into the "Royal Prussian Provincial Vocational School Cologne" founded in 1833. In 1910 Emil Thormählen came to Cologne to develop a School of Applied Arts as part of the German Werkbund movement. However his plans to build a new school building had to be postponed due to the outbreak of war in 1914. When the plans could not be taken forward immediately after the war, Thormählen retired November 1919.
