Christ Church (Church Hill, Mississippi)
Christ Church is a historic church on MS 553 in Church Hill, Mississippi. Description and history The building was designed by architect J. Edward Smith in the Gothic Revival style. The brick building is covered in stucco that is scored to simulate ashlar masonry. This stucco was original salmon colored. The nave is rectangular with four bays on each side with narrow lancet windows between buttresses. It was built in 1858 for the first Episcopalian congregation in Mississippi. This was their third church building and bricks from the second church (1829) were used in its construction. The first had been a log structure built under the guidance of Rev. Adam Cloud who had been expelled for preaching in the area by the Spanish when the area was part of Spanish West Florida. The church was occupied by soldiers of the Union Army in 1864 during the American Civil War. The property was added to the United States National Register of Historic Places on May 6, 1977. State highways in Mississippi are maintained by the Mississippi Department of Transportation. The state numbers its highways in a grid-like pattern, much like the U.S. Route numbering scheme. One and two-digit routes are primary highways. Odd-numbered routes run north–south and start from MS 1, which runs along the Mississippi River, to MS 25, which runs near the Alabama border. In addition to routes 1 through 25, routes 27 through 41 repeat this pattern over the first several routes, still increasing in number from west to east, and routes 43 and higher generally run in the southern part of the state. Even-numbered routes run east–west; these start from MS 2, which runs near the Tennessee state line, and continue to MS 26, which runs in the southern part of the state. History Of Mississippi
The history of the state of Mississippi extends back to thousands of years of indigenous peoples. Evidence of their cultures has been found largely through archeological excavations, as well as existing remains of earthwork mounds built thousands of years ago. Native American traditions were kept through oral histories; with Europeans recording the accounts of historic peoples they encountered. Since the late 20th century, there have been increased studies of the Native American tribes and reliance on their oral histories to document their cultures. Their accounts have been correlated with evidence of natural events. Initial colonization of the region was carried out by the French, though France would cede their control over portions of the region to Spain and Britain, particularly along the Gulf Coast.
