Chris White (multihull Designer)
Chris White is an American multihull sailboat designer. Career White built his first trimaran, a Jim Brown designed Searunner 31, in 1973. In the late 1970s he worked with Jim Brown and Dick Newick. His first large design was the 52' trimaran, ''Juniper'', built in southern Virginia and launched in 1981, later sailed around the world by Henk de Velde. In 1983 he started his design business, developing the concept of the forward cockpit or pilot house catamaran. The first of the Atlantic Cats were launched in 1985. Multihull Designers
A multihull is a boat or ship with more than one hull, whereas a vessel with a single hull is a monohull. The most common multihulls are catamarans (with two hulls), and trimarans (with three hulls). There are other types, with four or more hulls, but such examples are very rare and tend to be specialised for particular functions. Sailing multihulls Counter-intuitively, it is unhelpful to think of the design progression to be "1-2-3", namely monohull - catamaran - trimaran; rather, it is "1-3-2". A sailing trimaran is, in effect, a modified monohull with lightweight outrigger hulls (or "amas") for stability instead of a heavy deep keel; so it follows that a sailing trimaran will be lighter and faster than a sailing monohull. A sailing trimaran will have a centre hull that may comprise up to 90% of total hull volume, and 95% of total deadweight. Henk De Velde
Henk de Velde (12 January 1949 – 3 November 2022) was a Dutch seafarer. He was especially known for his long solo-voyages around the world. Initially he worked for thirteen years in the merchant navy, from Able Seaman (occupation), able-bodied seaman to Captain (nautical), captain. When he was 28 he chose definitively for ocean-sailing. In 1978, he started with its first voyage around the world, which would eventually take seven years. He made this voyage with his former wife until they separated in 1984. Their son Stefan Vairoa was born on Easter Island in 1981. In 1985, he returned to the Netherlands. In 1989, he left again for a nonstop circumnavigation with a 60-foot (18 meter) catamaran, called Alisun J&B, and it took him 158 days. He had to stop in New Zealand for repairs. His third voyage, in 1992, with a 60 ft (18 meter) catamaran called Zeeman, was viewed on Dutch TV in the so-called ''5 O'clock Show''.
