__NOTOC__ Chiton is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the south coast of Fleurieu Peninsula about south of the state capital of Adelaide and about west of the municipal seat of Goolwa. Chiton consists of land bounded by the alignment of Ocean Road to the west, Waterport Road to the north, the alignment of Brickyard Road in part to the east and Port Elliot Road and the coastline with Encounter Bay to the south. Boundaries for the locality were created on 7 June 2018 via the division of the existing suburb of Hayborough along the boundary between the local government areas of the Alexandrina Council and the City of Victor Harbor. The name change was requested by local residents via the Alexandrina Council. Chiton is a “long established name” within the locality and which has been used for a rocky coastal feature and for the name of a surf lifesaving club. Encounter Bay is a bay in the Australian state of South Australia located on the state's south central coast about south of the state capital of Adelaide. It was named by Matthew Flinders after his encounter on 8 April 1802 with Nicolas Baudin, the commander of the Baudin expedition of 1800–03. It is the site of both the mouth of the River Murray and the regional city of Victor Harbor. It is one of four "historic bays" located on the South Australian coast. The Fleurieu Peninsula () is a peninsula in the Australian state of South Australia located south of the state capital of Adelaide. History Before British colonisation of South Australia, the western side of the peninsula was occupied by the Kaurna people, while several clans of the Ngarrindjeri lived on the eastern side. The people were sustained by the flora and fauna of the peninsula, for food and bush medicine. The bulrushes, reeds and sedges were used for basket-weaving or making rope, trees provided wood for spears, and stones were fashioned into tools. Port Elliot, South Australia
Port Elliot is a town in South Australia toward the eastern end of the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula. It is situated on the sheltered Horseshoe Bay, a small bay off the much larger Encounter Bay. Pullen Island lies outside the mouth of the bay.
