Isachar Zacharie
Isachar Zacharie (1825 – September 16, 1900) was a British-American chiropodist (podiatrist), plagiarist, and close confidant and advisor to President of the United States Abraham Lincoln. Born in England, he emigrated to the United States with his family and used falsified educational credentials and fake celebrity endorsements to establish a successful podiatry practice. Zacharie returned to Britain in the 1870s after failing in an attempt to fraudulently bill the U.S. government for podiatric services supposedly rendered by him during the American Civil War. Early life and education Isachar Zacharie was born into a Jewish family in Kent, England in 1827. His father, Jan Zacharie, had immigrated to England from Prussia. By age ten, Isachar was working as a physician's apprentice. Lewis Durlacher
Lewis Durlacher (1792– 3 March 1864) was a chiropodist who was appointed as surgeon-chiropodist to the royal household in 1823 and served under George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria. Durlacher was born in Warwickshire (some sources say Birmingham). His parents, who were Jewish, were Solomon Abraham Durlacher (1757–1845), a chiropodist and dentist who came from Durlach near Karlsruhe, Germany, and his wife Elizabeth ("Betsy") Harris who was from Warwickshire, perhaps Birmingham. London Foot Hospital
The London Foot Hospital was founded in 1913 as The Pedic Clinic for Gratuitous Treatment of the Feet. It was the first free clinic for treatment of feet in England, and its School of Podiatric Medicine, which started as evening classes in 1919, provided the first systematic education in chiropody. The Pedic Clinic started in Silver Street, London, Silver Street and then moved to Charlotte Street, where it was renamed the London Foot Hospital. The premises at 33 Fitzroy Square were acquired in 1929 and became the main home of the hospital until it was closed in 2003. The hospital later expanded into number 40 Fitzroy Square, at the other end of the terrace, which was formerly the London Skin Hospital. The building at number 33 became a Grade I listed building in 1954, and the other hospital buildings on the south side of Fitzroy Square were added to the listing in 1974.
