Chirades
Chirades ( el, Χιράδες, locally known as ''Kyrades'') is a mountain village in southwestern Arcadia, Greece. It is located in the mountains on the border with Messenia, at about 800 m elevation. It is 2 km east of Souli, 4 km south of Paradeisia, 6 km northwest of Tourkolekas and 14 km southwest of Megalopoli. In 2011 Chirades had a population of 80. Chirades suffered damage from the 2007 Greek forest fires. Megalopolis, Greece
Megalopoli ( el, Μεγαλόπολη) is a town in the southwestern part of the regional unit of Arcadia, southern Greece. It is located in the same site as ancient Megalopolis ( grc, Μεγαλόπολις, literally ''large/great city''). When it was founded in 371 BC, it was the first large urbanization in rustic Arcadia. Its theater had a capacity of 20,000 visitors, making it one of the largest ancient Greek theaters. Today Megalopoli has several schools, shops, churches, hotels and other services. The population of Megalopoli in 2011 was 5,779 residents. Geography Megalopoli is situated in a wide valley, surrounded by mountains: the Taygetus to the south, the Mainalo to the north, the Tsemperou to the southeast and the Lykaion to the west. Its elevation is 430 m above sea level. The river Alfeios flows through this valley, coming from the east and flowing to the north, passing south and west of the town. Souli, Arcadia
Souli ( el, Σούλι) is a village and a community in the municipality of Megalopoli in southwestern Arcadia (regional unit), Arcadia, Greece. The community consists of the mountain villages Souli and Derveni. Both villages are located in the mountains on the border with Messenia, at about 500 m elevation. Derveni is on the old road from Megalopoli to Kalamata, and Souli is 1 km southeast of it. Souli is 2 km west of Chirades, 4 km southwest of Paradeisia, Arcadia, Paradeisia, 15 km southwest of Megalopoli and 30 km north of Kalamata. Souli suffered damage from the 2007 Greek forest fires. Messenia
Messenia or Messinia ( ; el, Μεσσηνία ) is a regional unit (''perifereiaki enotita'') in the southwestern part of the Peloponnese region, in Greece. Tourkolekas
Tourkoleka ( el, Τουρκολέκα) is a settlement in the municipal unit of Falaisia, southwest Arcadia, Greece. It is situated in the mountains near the border with Messenia, at about 800 m elevation. It is 5 km west of Kamara, 6 km northeast of Pefko (Messenia), 8 km southwest of Leontari and 17 km south of Megalopoli. In 2011 Tourkoleka had a population of 190. Every August, Tourkoleka celebrates its Nikitareia festival in honour of Nikitaras, a Greek revolutionary leader. There is a marble statue of Nikitaras in the village. 2007 Greek Forest Fires
The 2007 Greek forest fires were a series of massive forest fires that broke out in several areas across Greece throughout the summer of 2007. The most destructive and lethal infernos broke out on 23 August, expanded rapidly and raged out of control until 27 August, until they were finally put out in early September. The fires mainly affected western and southern Peloponnese as well as southern Euboea. The death toll in August alone stood at 67 people. In total 84 people lost their lives because of the fires, including several fire fighters. Some of these firestorms are believed to be the result of arson while others were merely the result of negligence. Hot temperatures, including three consecutive heat waves of over 40 °C (105 °F), and severe drought rendered the 2007 summer unprecedented in modern Greek history.
