Chief Of Defence Force (Singapore)
The chief of Defence Force is the head of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), who holds the rank Lieutenant-General or Vice-Admiral. The position was created in 1974 as Chief of the General Staff, with the appointment of Winston Choo, before changing to its current name in May 1990. Prior to the appointment of Choo as Chief of the General Staff, the Ministry of Defence was in charge of the SAF. Before the position was created, the head of Singapore Army—which at that time made up the military—held the position of Director, General Staff. The president has the power to appoint each new CDF, as well as new chief of each of the four services in the SAF, on the advice of the prime minister, who in turn must consult with the Armed Forces Council, Section 10A. Melvyn Ong
Melvyn Ong Su Kiat (born 1975) is a Singaporean lieutenant-general who has been serving as Chief of Defence Force since 2018. Prior to his appointment as Chief of Defence Force, he served as Chief of Army between 2015 and 2018. Education Ong was educated at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and National Junior College, before being awarded the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Overseas Scholarship in 1994 to study at the London School of Economics, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science with second class honours degree. He also completed a Master of Science degree in economics at the London School of Economics in 1998. Ong attended the Indonesian Army Command and General Staff College in Bandung in 2005. Kirpa Ram Vij
Kirpa Ram Vij (1935 – 29 October 2022) was an Indian-born Singaporean civil servant, business executive, and brigadier-general. Vij was born in Hazara District in British India (now Pakistan) in 1935 and moved to Singapore after 1947. He graduated from the Raffles Institution in 1956. He later joined the Singapore Volunteer Corps as lieutenant in 1960. Before becoming the Director of General Staff, Vij has served in the civil service and was the Director of the Singapore Command and Staff College. He became a brigadier-general and was head of the SAF between 1970 and 1974. Ng Jui Ping
Ng Jui Ping (17 October 1948 – 1 January 2020) was a Singaporean lieutenant-general who served as Chief of Defence Force between 1992 and 1995. Education Ng held a Master of Arts in history from Duke University. He attended the six-week Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. Military career Ng's career in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) spanned 30 years. Goh Keng Swee (; 6 October 1918 – 14 May 2010), born Robert Goh Keng Swee, was a Singaporean politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore between 1973 and 1985.
