''Chicano Power!'' (subtitled: ''Latin Rock In The USA 1968-1976'') is a 1998 compilation album released by Soul Jazz Records. The album contains Latin bands predominantly from the United States during the late 1960s and 1970s who combined rock, jazz and Latin music. The album was released to positive reception from online music database AllMusic but to more lukewarm or mixed reviews from ''The Guardian'' and the ''NME''. Music and content ''Chicano Power'' is a compilation album that focuses on Latin bands throughout the United States who combined rock, jazz, and Latin music in the late 1960s and 1970s. Richie Unterberger of AllMusic noted that despite the title, the album contained music beyond Mexican-American bands from Los Angeles and San Francisco but also Puerto Rican-American groups and artists from New York and Miami. Soul Jazz Records is a British record label based in London. Outside of releasing records, the label also publishes books, occasionally films and performs as a DJ set. The music releases labels from a variety of genres, including reggae, house music, house, hip hop music, hip hop, punk rock, jazz, funk, bossa nova and soul music, soul. History Soul Jazz Records was founded by Stuart Baker in 1991. Baker purchased his first record at the age of 10 and prior to starting the label, had his roots selling records at a secondhand record vinyl stall in the Camden market in the late 1980s. The label initially worked doing straight reissues of old albums before releasing ''Nu Yorica!'', a double album of classic salsa music, salsa and Latin funk from the 1970s. It catalogs more than three million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musicians and bands. Initiated in 1991, the database was first made available on the Internet in 1994. AllMusic is owned by RhythmOne. History AllMusic was launched as ''All Music Guide'' by Michael Erlewine, a "compulsive archivist, noted astrologer, Buddhist scholar and musician". ''The Guardian'' is a British daily newspaper. It was founded in 1821 as ''The Manchester Guardian'', and changed its name in 1959. Santana is an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1966 by American guitarist Carlos Santana. The band has undergone multiple recording and performing line-ups in its history, with Santana the only consistent member. ''Nu Yorica! – Culture Clash in New York City: Experiments in Latin Music 1970–77'' is a 1996 compilation album of Latin music released by Soul Jazz Records in 1996. The album was received positive reviews in '' The Guardian'' and ''Muzik'' on its initial release. A follow-up album titled ''Nu Yorica 2!'' was released in 1997. Chicano Power Movement
Chicano or Chicana is a chosen identity for many Mexican Americans in the United States. The label ''Chicano'' is sometimes used interchangeably with ''Mexican American'', although the terms have different meanings. While Mexican-American identity was related to encouraging assimilation into White American society and separating the community from the African-American political struggle, Chicano identity emerged among anti-assimilationist youth. Some belonged to the Pachuco subculture, and claimed the term (which had previously been a classist and racist slur). The term ''Chicano'' was widely reclaimed by ethnic Mexicans in the 1960s and 1970s to express political empowerment, ethnic solidarity, and pride in being of Indigenous descent (with many using the Nahuatl language), diverging from the more assimilationist ''Mexican American'' term.
