''Nu Yorica! – Culture Clash in New York City: Experiments in Latin Music 1970–77'' is a 1996 compilation album of Latin music released by Soul Jazz Records in 1996. The album was received positive reviews in '' The Guardian'' and ''Muzik'' on its initial release. A follow-up album titled ''Nu Yorica 2!'' was released in 1997. The album was reissued in 2015 with remastered audio and some re-arranged and re-placed tracks. Music The music on the disc is Latin music crossing over with funk, soul music, and jazz. The album was a double album of classic salsa and Latin funk from the 1970s. Release ''Nu Yorica!'' was released in February 1996 by Soul Jazz Records. Peter Reilly spoke on the labels behalf that ''Nu Yorica'' was their first "really successful record" from Soul Jazz noting that "it was more of a kind of cult thing up until then. Soul Jazz Records is a British record label based in London. Outside of releasing records, the label also publishes books, occasionally films and performs as a DJ set. The music releases labels from a variety of genres, including reggae, house music, house, hip hop music, hip hop, punk rock, jazz, funk, bossa nova and soul music, soul. History Soul Jazz Records was founded by Stuart Baker in 1991. Baker purchased his first record at the age of 10 and prior to starting the label, had his roots selling records at a secondhand record vinyl stall in the Camden market in the late 1980s. The label initially worked doing straight reissues of old albums before releasing ''Nu Yorica!'', a double album of classic salsa music, salsa and Latin funk from the 1970s. Masters At Work
Masters at Work is the American garage house production and remix team of "Little" Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez. The duo has produced music together under the names MAW, KenLou, Sole Fusion, Hardrive, and Nuyorican Soul. They have been referred to as one of the most influential artists in the history of house music. Biography In the late 1980s, Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez organized a series of block parties with his friend Mike Delgado under the name "Masters at Work". Gonzalez loaned the name to Todd Terry for his 1987 singles "Alright Alright" and "Dum Dum Cry", with editing by Mike Delgado and Franklin Martinez. Terry had attended Gonzalez's parties and became influential to him. When Vega was hired to mix one of Terry's freestyles, this eventually led him to meeting Gonzalez. Latin Funk
Funk is a music genre that originated in African Americans, African American communities in the mid-1960s when musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of various music genres that were popular among African Americans in the mid-20th century. It de-emphasizes melody and chord progressions and focuses on a strong rhythmic groove (music), groove of a bassline played by an electric bassist and a drum part played by a drum kit, percussionist, often at slower tempos than other popular music. Funk typically consists of a complex percussive groove with Rhythm section, rhythm instruments playing interlocking grooves that create a "hypnotic" and "danceable" feel.
