Charles Chesters
Charles Geddes Coull Chesters OBE FRSE FLS (1904–1993) was a British botanist specialising in fungi and lichens. Life He was born in Glasgow on 9 March 1904, the son of Charles Geddes Chesters, a commercial traveller, and Margaret Geddes. He attended Hyndland School in Glasgow. He was awarded a place at Glasgow University in 1922 and graduated BSc in botany in 1926. His early interest lay in aquatic and salt-marsh vegetation. However, from 1931 he began to specialise in fungi, and founded the Research School in Phycomycetes (looking at fungi responsible for soil-born plant diseases) and Pyrenomycetes (wood- and bark-inhibiting fungi). At this time he was working with Walter Stiles FRS at Birmingham University. In 1937 he received a PhD for work in this field. In the war he served as an air raid warden. Lisa Chesters
Lisa Marie Chesters (born 11 February 1980) is an Australian politician. She is a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2013, representing the Division of Bendigo. Prior to her election to parliament she worked as a union organiser for United Voice. Early life Chesters was born in Wentworthville, New South Wales. Her parents owned a small business, although her mother Jenny Chesters later completed a PhD as a mature-age student and became an academic. Chesters holds the degree of Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland. She was involved in student politics, serving as secretary of the University of Queensland Union in 2002 and as women's officer of the National Union of Students in 2003. She subsequently worked as an organiser for United Voice from 2003 to 2013. Chesters (estate)
Chesters is a country estate near Ancrum, located on the banks of the River Teviot in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland. The estate includes a listed house, workers houses, gardens and extensive grounds. National Grid Reference NT 60842 22512. History The house was built for Thomas Elliot Ogilvie who purchased the estate in 1787 with money he obtained while working for the Madras Civil Service. Five years before he had married Hannah Pasley (born Dashwood). By 1790 it had been re- designed by local Borders architect William Eliot for Thomas and Hannah Ogilvie. Emily Gerard, a writer who inspired Bram Stoker's ''Dracula'', was born here in 1849. Steve Hislop the motorcyclist was born in Chesters in 1962. In 2008 and 2011, the house appeared in episodes of the Channel 4 television series ''Country House Rescue'', starring Ruth Watson. Chesters (Humshaugh)
Chesters is an 18th-century country mansion adjacent to Hadrian's Wall and the Roman fort of Cilurnum at Humshaugh, Northumberland, England. It is a Grade II* listed building. The house was built for John Errington of Walwick Grange''The Beauties of England and Wales; Delineations Topographical, Historical and Descriptive'' Vol XII Pt I Rev J Hodgson and FC Laird (1813) p135 Google Books in about 1771 with three storeys and four bays but was much improved and extended by architect Norman Shaw in 1891. The 1891 work included five two-storeyed three-bay wings and a stable block. The stable block is separately Grade II* listed. Of the five wings, three were diagonal, creating suntrap flanks for the south and west fronts. Shaw's remodelling of Chesters kindled the popularity of the butterfly plan in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chesters Roman Fort
Cilurnum or Cilurvum was a fort on Hadrian's Wall mentioned in the ''Notitia Dignitatum''. It is now identified with the fort found at Chesters (also known as Walwick Chesters to distinguish it from other sites named Chesters in the vicinity) near the village of Walwick, Northumberland, England. It was built in 123 AD, just after the wall's completion. Cilurnum is considered to be the best preserved Roman cavalry fort along Hadrian's Wall. The site is now preserved by English Heritage as Chesters Roman Fort. There is a museum on the site, housing finds from the fort and elsewhere along the wall. Construction The site guarded a bridge, Chesters Bridge, carrying the Military Way Roman road behind the wall across the River North Tyne. Massive abutments survive of this bridge across the river from the fort.
