Chester Holland
Chester Arthur Holland (26 August 1888 – 10 November 1976) was a New Zealand cricketer who played one match for New Zealand in the days before New Zealand played Test cricket. Early life and career Holland was born in Bunnythorpe and educated at Palmerston North Boys' High School. He moved to Wanganui in 1907. An opening bowler who also often made useful runs in the middle and lower order, Chester Holland spent most of his career playing non-first-class cricket for Wanganui. In 1909-10 he took 6 for 58 against the touring Australians. In 1912-13, when Wanganui played their first match in the Hawke Cup, Holland took 5 for 14 and 3 for 11 against South Taranaki, in a match Wanganui won by an innings and 393 runs. In 1913-14 Wanganui dominated the Hawke Cup, winning all three matches, Holland taking 33 wickets at an average of 8.39. Bunnythorpe
Bunnythorpe is a village in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand's North Island, north of the region's major city, Palmerston North. Dairy farms predominate the surrounding area but the community facilities include Bunnythorpe School, with a roll of about 80 pupils as of 2010 as well as a Rugby Football Club, Country Club and several manufacturing plants. The population was 686 in the 2018 census. History The North Island Main Trunk Railway passed over government owned land, which was subdivided and later became Bunnythorpe. The village takes its name from Henry Bunny, the Secretary-Treasurer of the Wellington Provincial Council, which functioned from 1853 to 1876. On the other side of the rail line, the town of Mugby Junction was to be established. It was proposed in 1878, that the link between the North Island Main Trunk and the Napier line would be here. Poverty Bay Cricket Team
The Poverty Bay cricket team represents the Poverty Bay region of the North Island of New Zealand. It competes in the Hawke Cup. Its base is in Gisborne. History Early years Cricket was established in Gisborne in the 1870s. A Poverty Bay team travelled to Taradale to play a team from Napier in March 1877. Poverty Bay and the neighbouring region Hawke's Bay thereafter played each other regularly. The Poverty Bay Cricket Association was formed in October 1896. The touring Australian team played Poverty Bay in February 1914. It was the first visit of an international cricket team to Gisborne, and the Gisborne Borough Council declared a half-holiday for the first day of the match, a Friday, and gave a civic reception to the Australians on the Friday morning. Auckland Cricket Team
The Auckland cricket team represent the Auckland region and are one of six New Zealand domestic first class cricket teams. Governed by the Auckland Cricket Association they are the most successful side having won 28 Plunket Shield titles, ten wins in The Ford Trophy and the Super Smash four times. The side currently play their home games at Eden Park Outer Oval. The limited overs side, known as the Auckland Aces, have a predominantly light blue kit with a navy and white trim. Their One Day Championship shirt sponsors are Ford whilst their major T20 sponsor is Mondiale. They won the Men's Super Smash competition in the 2015–16 season, their 4th domestic Twenty20 title overall, making them become the most successful team in New Zealand. Plunket Shield
New Zealand has had a domestic first-class cricket championship since the 1906–07 season. Since the 2009–10 season it has been known by its original name of the Plunket Shield. History The Plunket Shield competition was instigated in October 1906 with the donation of a shield by William Plunket, 5th Baron Plunket, who was the Governor-General of New Zealand from 1904 to 1910. For the 1906–07 inaugural season, the Shield was allotted by the New Zealand Cricket Council "to the Association whose representative team it considers to have the best record for the season". After the Council awarded the Shield to Canterbury, chiefly because Canterbury were the only provincial team to beat the visiting MCC, Auckland representatives complained that Auckland should have received the Shield as their team was superior but had not had the chance to prove it as none of the other provincial teams had played Auckland during the season. Minor Associations Cricket Team
The Minor Associations cricket team, representing the Minor Associations in New Zealand, appeared once at first-class level, playing against the touring Australians at the Basin Reserve in March 1921. The Australians batted first and made 271, then the Minor Associations made 124 and 141, losing by an innings and 6 runs. The Minor Associations team included players from the Manawatu, Nelson, North Taranaki, Poverty Bay, Rangitikei, Wairarapa and Wanganui associations. As Hawke's Bay and Southland were still competing at first-class level, their players were not considered. The team included only three men whose careers amounted to more than a handful of first-class games: Ces Dacre, David Collins and Bill Bernau. For six of the team it was their only first-class match. An Australian cricket team toured New Zealand from February to April 1921 to play nine first-class matches including two against New Zealand. The Australians also played the main provincial teams. New Zealand Rifle Brigade (Earl Of Liverpool's Own)
The New Zealand Rifle Brigade (Earl of Liverpool's Own), affectionately known as The Dinks, was formed on 1 May 1915 as the third brigade of the New Zealand Division, part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. During the First World War it fought in Egypt, against the Senussi, and then on the Western Front. It was disbanded on 4 February 1919. Background Following the outbreak of the First World War, the New Zealand government authorised the formation of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF), under the command of Major General Alexander Godley, for service abroad. By October 1914, there were sufficient volunteers to form two brigades, the New Zealand Infantry Brigade and the New Zealand Mounted Brigade.
