Cherry Run
Cherry Run is a U.S. Geological Survey. National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution flowline dataThe National Map, accessed August 15, 2011 meandering stream that forms the northern section of the boundary between Morgan and Berkeley counties in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle. While it is mostly non-navigable, Cherry Run provides many pools of varying depths for fishing and swimming. As a tributary of the Potomac River, Cherry Run is part of the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay watersheds. Headwaters and course Cherry Run is formed by mountain springs on the northern flanks of Third Hill Mountain (2,172 feet) south of Paines Knob (1,352 feet). From its source, it acts as a natural boundary between Morgan and Berkeley Counties. Cherry Run flows southeast through the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area via a gap in Short Mountain (1,375 feet). Big Pool is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in western Washington County, Maryland, Washington County, Maryland, United States. Its population was 82 as of the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. It is between Clear Spring, Maryland and Hancock, Maryland along Interstate 70 in Maryland, Interstate 70 and is officially a part of the Hagerstown Metropolitan Area. To the south of Big Pool lies Fort Frederick State Park, a restored fort used during the French and Indian War. Also nearby is the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, which lies near Ft. Frederick alongside the Potomac River. Baltimore And Ohio Railroad
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first common carrier railroad and the oldest railroad in the United States, with its first section opening in 1830. Merchants from Baltimore, which had benefited to some extent from the construction of the National Road early in the century, wanted to do business with settlers crossing the Appalachian Mountains. The railroad faced competition from several existing and proposed enterprises, including the Albany-Schenectady Turnpike, built in 1797, the Erie Canal, which opened in 1825, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. At first, the B&O was located entirely in the state of Maryland; its original line extending from the port of Baltimore west to Sandy Hook, Maryland, opened in 1834. Cherry Run, West Virginia
Cherry Run is a small unincorporated community hamlet located along the CSX Transportation (formerly Baltimore and Ohio Railroad) mainline on the Potomac River in Morgan County in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The community is named for the stream, Cherry Run, that meets the Potomac in its vicinity. It was originally known as Cherry Run Depot because of the important interchange between the B&O and the Western Maryland Railway located there. The last remnant of the interchange was Miller Tower, an interlocking tower controlling the junction. The tower was closed in September 2000, disassembled, and moved to the Martinsburg Shops site in February 2001. It was eventually reassembled there in November 2005. Across the Potomac from Cherry Run lies Big Pool on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.
