Cherry (novel)
''Cherry'' is a 2018 debut novel by American author Nico Walker. It concerns an unnamed narrator's time in college, as a soldier during the War in Iraq, and life as a drug addict and bank robber after returning from the war during the midst of the American opioid epidemic. It was published by Alfred A. Knopf on August 14, 2018. The book is an example of autofiction, as the author was a military veteran who struggled with drug addiction and robbed banks, but there are several differences between Walker's real-life actions and the book's contents. Synopsis The unnamed narrator, a young man from Cleveland, drops out of college and enlists in the United States Army as a medic during the Iraq War. Suffering from PTSD, the narrator starts self-medicating with opiates while deployed and continues once back home. Nico Walker
Nicholas Walker (born April 19, 1985) is an American author and US Army veteran who served time in prison for bank robbery. His semi-autobiographical debut novel, ''Cherry'', was published by Alfred A. Knopf on August 14, 2018. Career From 2005 to 2006, Walker served as an Army medic in an Infantry unit in Iraq, going on more than 250 combat missions. After returning to civilian life, he had undiagnosed PTSD, was depressed and traumatized, and became addicted to heroin and Oxycodone. Matthew Johnson, a publisher at Tyrant Books,sent Walker books and encouraged him to write about his life while Walker was in prison. He spent nearly four years writing and rewriting. The resulting novel, ''Cherry'', was published by Alfred A. Knopf and is about "the horrors of war and addiction."
