Chen Xiyao
Chen Xi Yao (; born 1984) is a Chinese-born classical musician. He is a guzheng (Chinese zither) player and pianist. He currently lives in Beijing but spent a number of years in New Zealand. Early life Yao was born and raised in a well-known traditional Chinese musical family in Beijing, China. His grandfather, Cao Dongfu (曹东扶) was a famous composer and guzheng master, as well as one of the founders of the China Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. His mother, Li Bian, is a guzheng professor who holds the "National First Rank" Performer title in China, and is the only Guzheng Master granted the title of “Son of the East” from the Chinese Government in 1997. His father, Chen Chuan Rong, is a professional conductor and erhu player. Renee Liang
Renee Wen-Wei Liang (born 1973) is a New Zealand paediatrician, poet, essayist, short story writer, playwright, librettist, theatre producer and medical researcher. She has been the recipient of several awards for her services to arts, science and medicine and is also noted for her services to the Chinese New Zealand community. She lives in Auckland. Biography Liang was born in 1973. She is a second generation Chinese New Zealander and has two younger sisters, Rhea (a surgeon) and Roseanne (a filmmaker). She attended St Cuthbert's College and graduated from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery in 1996, a Master of Creative Writing in 2007 and a Postgraduate Diploma of Arts (Theatre) in 2009. Guzheng Players
The zheng () or gu zheng (), is a Chinese plucked zither. The modern guzheng commonly has 21, 25, or 26 strings, is long, and is tuned in a major pentatonic scale. It has a large, resonant soundboard made from ''Paulownia'' wood. Other components are often made from other woods for structural or decorative reasons. Guzheng players often wear fingerpick made from materials such as plastic, resin, tortoiseshell, or ivory on one or both hands. Strings There are nylon steel strings, steel strings, silk strings, etc., depending on the genre. Now, the most common guzheng is 21 strings guzheng. Zithers (; , from the Greek word ''cithara'') are a class of stringed instruments. Historically, the name has been applied to any instrument of the psaltery family, or to an instrument consisting of many strings stretched across a thin, flat body. This article describes the latter variety. Zithers are typically played by strumming or plucking the strings with the fingers or a plectrum. In the Hornbostel–Sachs classification system, the term refers to a larger family of similarly shaped instruments that also includes the hammered dulcimer family and piano and a few rare bowed instruments like the bowed psaltery, bowed dulcimer, and streichmelodion.
