Chen Changjie (badminton)
Chen Changjie (); is a retired professional badminton player from China. Career Chen rated among the world's leading singles players when China entered the International Badminton Federation (now Badminton World Federation) in 1981. The powerful Changjie won the first major IBF sanctioned tournament in which China participated, the multi-sport 1981 World Games in Santa Clara, California, by successively beating Prakash Padukone and Morten Frost in the semifinal and final rounds. He helped China to win the 1982 Thomas Cup (world men's team championship) by winning three of his four matches in the last two rounds against Denmark and Indonesia. Chen () () is a common Chinese-language surname and one of the most common surnames in Asia. It is the most common surname in Taiwan (2010) and Singapore (2000). Morten Frost
Morten Frost or Morten Frost Hansen (born 4 April 1958) is a former badminton player and later coach, who represented Denmark. As a player, he spent twelve years in the top three of the world rankings. Badminton career During his career, Frost won almost every available top level championship, except the World Badminton Championships where he scored a silver medal twice (1985 and 1987). When he lost his second World Championship in the finals, the headlines rang out "The World's greatest badminton player may never be World Champion." While this may be the enduring footnote to his career, Frost dominated at the much coveted All England Open Badminton Championships. He won that tournament in 1982, 1984, 1986, and 1987. San Jose Civic Auditorium
The San Jose Civic (formerly known as the San Jose Civic Auditorium and City National Civic) is a former arena, currently operating as a theatre, located in downtown San Jose, California. Hadiyanto Wirawan (born 31 March 1955) is an Indonesian former badminton player. About A former national champion, Hadiyanto is best remembered for his win over top seed Prakash Padukone Prakash Padukone (born 10 June 1955) is a former Indian badminton player. He was ranked World No. 1 in 1980; the same year he became the first Indian to win the All England Open Badminton Championships. Zhang Ailing (; born 1957) is a retired badminton player from China. Career In 1978 Zhang won women's singles at the rival "world championship" which was run by the short-lived World Badminton Federation prior to China's entry into the International Badminton Federation (now Badminton World Federation). She was the dominant international singles player when China joined the IBF in 1981, winning the multi-sport World Games in 1981, the Badminton at the Asian Games, Asian Games in 1982, and the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championships, All-England Championships in both 1982 and 1983, as well as a host of other significant titles. Eddy Kurniawan
Eddy Kurniawan (; born 2 July 1962 in Semarang, Central Java) is a retired Chinese-Indonesian male badminton player. Career Kurniawan's prime years, the mid to late 1980s, were a period of Chinese domination of international men's singles competition. Though he frequently appeared in the later rounds of major international tournaments, the hard-fighting Kurniawan rarely won them. One exception was his victory at the 1990 World Badminton Grand Prix, where he defeated Malaysia's Rashid Sidek in the final. He won the Australian Open in 1992. Kurniawan was a bronze medalist at the 1989 IBF World Championships in Jakarta. Perhaps the highlight of his career was his performance at the 1989 Sudirman Cup (combined men's and women's team world championship) when his victories over Korean opponents in both singles and mixed doubles in the last two matches of the contest secured the title for Indonesia. Asian Badminton Championships
The Badminton Asia Championships (formerly Asian Badminton Championships until 2006) is a tournament organized by governing body Badminton Asia to crown the best badminton players in Asia. The tournament started in 1962 and is held annually since 1991. The event had rotated between team and individual competitions before the team event became null since 1994. At the 2003 event however, there is a controversy when China decided to pull out from the tournament at the last minute. Head coach Li Yongbo said that the tournament did not award any ranking points for the 2004 Summer Olympics event and wanted to give his players more time to rest. Some of the top players were also willing to pull out from the tournament since the competitiveness of the event was low.
