"Chemical Heart" is the first single from Grinspoon's third studio album, ''New Detention''. The song was written as a tribute to Jessica Michalik, who was crushed to death at the Sydney Big Day Out in 2001 during the Limp Bizkit set. It reached No. 25 on the Australian Singles Chart on 31 March 2002. Grinspoon are an Australian Rock music, rock band from Lismore, New South Wales, formed in 1995 and fronted by Phil Jamieson on vocals and guitar with Pat Davern on guitar, Joe Hansen on bass guitar and Kristian Hopes on drums. Also in 1995, Grinspoon won the Triple J-sponsored Unearthed (talent contest), Unearthed competition for Lismore, with their post-grunge song "Grinspoon (EP), Sickfest". The name "Grinspoon" was taken from Lester Grinspoon, Dr. Lester Grinspoon, an associate professor emeritus of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, who supported marijuana for medical use. The Grinspoon sound changed to more mainstream rock at the release of the 2002 album, ''New Detention'', gaining fans and peaking at No. 2 on the ARIA Charts, ARIA Albums Charts; similarly 2007's ''Alibis & Other Lies'' also reached No. 2. Big Day Out
The Big Day Out (BDO) was an annual music festival that was held in five Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Adelaide, and Perth, as well as Auckland, New Zealand. The festival was held during summer, typically in January of each year but was sometimes held as late as early February in some cities including Perth. The event was conceptualised after the Violent Femmes announced a tour of Australia. Promoters Ken West and Vivian Lees sought another act as middle-level support for the band's tour. They succeeded in securing Nirvana to play the Sydney leg at the Hordern Pavilion. The Big Day Out debuted on the 1992 Australia Day public holiday in Sydney and eventually expanded to Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth the following year. New Detention
''New Detention'' is the third studio album by Australian alternative rock band Grinspoon. It was released in 2002 by record label Grudge, which peaked at No. 2 on the ARIA Albums Chart. By December that year it was certified platinum for shipment of 70,000 units. Content The ballad "Chemical Heart" marked a change in focus for the band towards a more mature, mainstream sound. This change would become more apparent on their next album, ''Thrills, Kills & Sunday Pills'' (2004), however, ''New Detention'' did contain songs in the classic Grinspoon style to appeal to fans of their previous work, such as the songs "Boltcutter" and "Killswitch". Jessica Michalik
Jessica Anna Michalik (7 January 1985 – 31 January 2001) was an Australian girl from Sydney, born to Polish immigrants, who died as a result of asphyxiation five days after being crushed in a mosh pit during the 2001 Big Day Out music festival during a performance by headlining act Limp Bizkit. Incident The Coroner's Court of New South Wales findings into her death criticized the crowd control measures in use at the time, as well as Limp Bizkit lead singer Fred Durst for his "alarming and inflammatory" comments during the rescue effort. Michalik's family and her best friend Liza Ryan have maintained that it was a series of factors that contributed to Michalik's death and that no one party was to blame.
