Chauliognathus Lugubris, Plague Soldier Beetle, Sydney, Australia
''Chauliognathus'' is a genus of soldier beetles in the family Cantharidae. Adults have almost rectangular bodies. Some are red and black, similar to the military uniforms that were common before the usage of camouflage, hence the name of soldier beetles. Others are orange and black. The elytra or first pair of wings are softer than the elytra of most beetles, that is why their other common name is leatherwings. The adults are frequently found on flowers, such as sunflowers, goldenrod, coneflowers, where they mate and feed on pollen and nectar. The larvae are more common in the ground or among debris, where they feed on eggs or larvae of other insects. The adults are most frequently found in summer and early fall. They are native to America and Australia. Goldenrod Soldier Beetle, Ottawa
Goldenrod is a common name for many species of flowering plants in the sunflower family, Asteraceae, commonly in reference to the genus ''Solidago''. Several genera, such as ''Euthamia'', were formerly included in a broader concept of the genus ''Solidago''. Some authors treat ''Oligoneuron'', the flat-topped goldenrods, as a separate genus than ''Solidago'', while others consider it a section: ''Solidago'' sect. ''Ptarmicoidei''. Goldenrods can be used as a sustainable method to enrich soil with nitrogen. With an increase of nitrogen levels, there can then be an increase of vegetative growth. Plants known as goldenrods include: *''Bigelowia'' spp., rayless goldenrods, 2 species native to the Southeastern United States *''Cuniculotinus gramineus'', Panamint rock goldenrod *''Euthamia'' spp., flat-topped goldenrods or grass-leaved goldenrods, 5 species native to North America *''Gundlachia triantha'', Trans-Pecos desert goldenrod *''Lorandersonia microcephala'', small-headed h ... Chauliognathus Pensylvanicus
The goldenrod soldier beetle or Pennsylvania leatherwing (''Chauliognathus pensylvanicus'') is a species of soldier beetle (Cantharidae). Nomenclature The specific epithet ' is Latin for "of Pennsylvania". The spelling with one ''n'' was in common use at the time (de Geer says in the description that the specimen was sent to him from 'Pensylvanie'), so the species name based on it cannot be corrected under the rules governing scientific names. Distribution The species is native to North America, and is one of the most common species of soldier beetle in the Midwest. Ecology ''C. pensylvanicus'' has been identified as an important pollinator of the prairie onion. Parasites Adult ''C. pensylvanicus'' may be infected by the fungus ''Eryniopsis lampyridarum ''Eryniopsis lampyridarum'' is an entomopathogenic fungus and its host is the soldier beetle, either '' Chauliognathus marginatus'' or ''Chauliognathus pensylvanicus The goldenrod soldier beetle or Pennsylvania leatherwing ...
