Chatra
Chatra is the headquarters of Chatra district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. History Chatra was the “headquarters” of Ramgarh district in the 18th-19th century. The renowned reformer, Raja Rammohan Roy, was ''sheristadar'' in Ramgarh district, in 1804–05, and used to function from both Ramgarh and Chatra. Subsequently, Ramgarh district became part of North-western Frontier Agency and Hazaribagh district came up. Chatra became a subdivision of Hazaribagh district in 1914. It became a full-fledged district in 1991. Geography Location Chatra is located at . Chatra (community Development Block)
Chatra is a community development block that forms an administrative division in the Chatra subdivision of the Chatra district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. Overview Chatra district forms a part of the Upper Hazaribagh Plateau, Lower Hazaribagh Plateau and northern scarp. Located at an elevation of about , the general slope of the district is from north to south. Red laterite acidic soil predominates in an area that is primarily dependent upon rain-fed agriculture. Around 60% of the district is covered with forests. The district has a population density of 275 persons per km2. Around two-thirds of the families in the district live below poverty line. In the extreme south of the district some portions of Tandwa CD Block are part of North Karanpura Coalfield. Chatra District
Chatra district is one of the twenty-four districts of Jharkhand state, India. The district was formed after separation from Hazaribagh district in 1991. Chatra is the administrative headquarters of this district. The district covers an area of 3718 km2. History Ancient period In ancient period, the area covered by the present district and adjoining areas were ruled by a number of states, which were collectively known as the ''Atavika'' (forest) states. These states accepted the suzerainty of the Maurya empire during Ashoka's reign ( BCE). Samudragupta, while marching through the present-day Chotanagpur region, directed the first attack against the kingdom of Dakshina Kosala in the Mahanadi valley. Medieval period During Muhammad bin Tughluq's reign, the territory which comprises the present district came in contact with the Delhi sultanate. Kunda, Chatra
Kunda is a village and gram panchayat in the Kunda CD block in the Chatra subdivision of the Chatra district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. History Kunda fort was strongly fortified and located on a hill in the later medieval period. In 1660, Daud Khan, the Mughal governor of Bihar during the reign of Aurangzeb, occupied the fort and completely destroyed it. Later in the same century, a rebuilt Kunda fort came under the possession of Raja of Ramgarh. In 1734, Alivardi Khan conquered and destroyed it. With the East India Company acquiring the ''diwani'' of Bengal, Bihar and Odisha in 1765, it derived the right to collect revenue from the estates of Ramgarh, Kharagdiha, Kendi and Kunda. In 1769, the area came in contact with the British when Captain Camac visited the area with the objective of establishing some sort of order in the “ Jungleterry” region. In 1771, Capt. Hunterganj
Hunterganj (''Shaligram Ramnarayapur''), is a historic town in the Chatra subdivision of the Chatra district, Jharkhand, India. Etymology The town is now named after Shaligram Singh and Ram Narayan Singh, two eminent freedom fighters of Chatra district (then Hazaribagh district). Geography Location It is located at at an elevation of 169 m above MSL. Hunterganj is an old town. The nearest railway station is at Gaya and the nearest airport is Gaya Airport.
