This is a list of recordings by American jazz alto saxophonist Charlie Parker ("Bird"). Parker primarily recorded for three labels: Savoy, Dial, and Verve. His work with these labels has been chronicled in box sets. Charlie Parker's Savoy and Dial Sessions have been issued on ''The Complete Savoy Sessions'', '' Charlie Parker on Dial'' and ''Complete Charlie Parker on Dial'' and ''The Complete Savoy & Dial Master Takes''. Although organized chronologically, the release titles listed refer to compilations of Parker material appearing decades after the recording sessions. Charlie Parker
Charles Parker Jr. (August 29, 1920 – March 12, 1955), nicknamed "Bird" or "Yardbird", was an American jazz saxophonist, band leader and composer. Parker was a highly influential soloist and leading figure in the development of bebop, a form of jazz characterized by fast tempos, virtuosic technique, and advanced harmonies. Parker was an extremely brilliant virtuoso and introduced revolutionary rhythmic and harmonic ideas into jazz, including rapid passing chords, new variants of altered chords, and chord substitutions. Primarily a player of the alto saxophone, Parker's tone ranged from clean and penetrating to sweet and somber. Parker acquired the nickname "Yardbird" early in his career on the road with Jay McShann. This, and the shortened form "Bird", continued to be used for the rest of his life, inspiring the titles of a number of Parker compositions, such as "Yardbird Suite", "Ornithology", "Bird Gets the Worm", and "Bird of Paradise". Summit Meeting At Birdland
''Summit Meeting at Birdland'' is a live album by alto saxophonist Charlie Parker recorded at Birdland in New York City in 1951 and 1953. It was released by Columbia Records in 1977. History The first side of the album, recorded in 1951, includes Parker with sidemen Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Bud Powell on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums. A March 1953 club date with Parker and the Milt Buckner Trio produced one track, " Groovin' High". The final May gig with Parker and pianist John Lewis, bassist Curley Russell, drummer Kenny Clarke, and percussionist Cándido Camero completed the B-side of the LP. Reception AllMusic critic Scott Yanow praised the album's "stirring" A-side and stated that the recording quality was "acceptable". Brian Priestley described the A-side with Gillespie and Powell as "a sparkling 25 minutes" in his biography of Parker. Swedish Schnapps (album)
''Swedish Schnapps'' ''(The Genius of Charlie Parker, volume 8)'' (MG V-8010) is a Charlie Parker compilation album, released by Verve Records, compiling recordings made by two different groups, on two different dates in 1951. The tracks had previously been released as 78rpm singles, and the master takes had previously appeared on the 1955 Clef Records LP ''The Magnificent Charlie Parker'' (MG C-646). The two sessions feature either Max Roach or Kenny Clarke on drums. The January 17, 1951 session features Miles Davis on trumpet, who had made many recordings as part of Parker's band in 1946 and 1947. This recording session was the same day as Davis' own first recording session for his new label, Prestige Records, which he would complete later the same day. Big Band (Charlie Parker Album)
''Big Band'' is a 1954 album by Charlie Parker of sides recorded in 1950 and 1952. In 1999 ''Big Band'' was reissued with bonus material and outtakes. Reception Stacia Proefrock reviewed the reissue of the album for Allmusic and wrote that these "Though Joe Lipman's arrangements are stellar, the musicians assembled for the sessions are an odd mix of Popular Music big-band players and improvisers. The album en todo also suffers from the Popular Music style of the songs themselves: solos are kept short, and songs limited to a three-minute length that was both radio-friendly and compatible with the 78-rpm format. But when Parker does solo, it is just as magical as any of his earlier recordings. The songs also have a sweet smoothness to them that makes them eminently enjoyable although jazz variety is lacking.
