Charlie Guest (golfer)
Charlotte "Charlie" Guest (born 30 December 1993) is a Scottish World Cup alpine ski racer who specialises in slalom and competes occasionally in giant slalom. She is the first British woman ever to win an Alpine European Cup race. Career Early career Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Guest started skiing at the age of 3 on the slopes of Cairngorm in the Scottish Highlands near her grandmother's home in Nethy Bridge. Guest trained there with the Scottish Ski Club until she joined the British Ski Academy in France at 11. At age 14, she became the first British girl to win an international children's race, before moving into FIS racing as part of the Scottish Alpine Ski Team. Adult career Guest made her slalom World Cup debut in 2013 at Flachau, Austria. At the end of 2014, she broke her spine in a skiing accident in Sweden, but by February 2016 had re-entered the top 100 rankings. Slalom is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding discipline, involving skiing between poles or gates. These are spaced more closely than those in giant slalom, super-G, super giant slalom and Downhill (ski competition), downhill, necessitating quicker and shorter turns. Internationally, the sport is contested at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, and at the Olympic Winter Games. The women's slalom competition of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics was held on 16 February 2018 at the Yongpyong Alpine Centre at the Alpensia Sports Park in PyeongChang. The competition was originally set to be held on 14 February 2018, but high winds forced officials to reschedule it for 16 February. In the victory ceremony, the medals were presented by Stefan Holm, member of the International Olympic Committee, accompanied by Mats Årjes, FIS Council member. Qualification A total of up to 320 alpine skiers qualified across all eleven events. Athletes qualified for this event by having met the A qualification standard, which meant having 140 or less FIS Points and being ranked in the top 500 in the Olympic FIS points list or meeting the B standard, which meant 140 or less FIS points. Alpine Skiing At The 2022 Winter Olympics
Alpine skiing at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held at the Yanqing National Alpine Ski Centre in Yanqing District, China. The competitions took place from 6 to 20 February 2022. Speed events were held on "Rock" course and technical events on "Ice River" course, for both men and women. Team event was held on "Rainbow." A total of 306 quota spots (153 per gender) were distributed to the alpine skiing, a reduction of 14 from 2018. Eleven events were contested: five for men, five for women, and one mixed (team). Qualification A maximum of 306 quota spots were available to athletes to compete at the games. A maximum of twenty-two athletes could be entered by a National Olympic Committee, with a maximum of eleven men or eleven women. The International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup was the premier circuit for alpine skiing competition. The inaugural season launched in January 1967, and the season marked the 56th consecutive year for the FIS World Cup. The inaugural season launched in January 1967, and the season marked the 55th consecutive year for the FIS World Cup. The International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup, the premier circuit for alpine skiing competition, began in January 1967, and the season marked the 54th consecutive year for the FIS World Cup. As it had every year since 2006 (when the Sölden races were cancelled by a snowstorm), the season began in Sölden, Austria in October. The season was supposed to end with the World Cup finals in March, which were to be held in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy for the first time since they began in 1993, but the finals were cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Italy. As part of an effort to control the expansion of the World Cup circuit while fighting increased specialization, the city events were dropped this season, to be replaced by more parallel events at regular venues, while the Alpine combined was expanded.
