Charley Havlat
Private First Class Charles Havlat (November 4, 1910May 7, 1945) is recognized as being the last United States Army soldier to be killed in combat in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. On May 7, 1945, he was a member of a reconnaissance patrol of the 803rd Tank Destroyer Battalion operating near present day Volary, Czechia. The patrol was ambushed by German soldiers, and Havlat was struck and killed by small arms fire about ten minutes before the news that all German troops in Europe were to obey a ceasefire order reached his unit, and only about six hours before the unconditional surrender of Germany. Saline County is a county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 14,200. Its county seat is Wilber. In the Nebraska license plate system, Saline County is represented by the prefix 22 (it had the twenty-second-largest number of vehicles registered in the state when the license plate system was established in 1922). Fort Lewis was a United States Army post from 1917 to 2010 located south-southwest of Tacoma, Washington. Fort Lewis was merged with McChord Air Force Base on 1 February 2010 to form Joint Base Lewis–McChord.
