Charlevoix (Montreal Metro)
Charlevoix station is a Montreal Metro station in the borough of Le Sud-Ouest in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is operated by the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and serves the Green Line. It is located in the district of Pointe-Saint-Charles. It opened on September 3, 1978, as part of the extension of the Green Line westward to Angrignon station. Architecture and art Designed by Ayotte et Bergeron, it was built as a stacked platform station, in order to reduce the width of the station owing to the weak Utica Shale in which it was built. The lower (Honoré-Beaugrand) platform is below the surface, making this the deepest station in the network, as well as the lowest in altitude (the lower platform is below sea level). The station has one ticket hall and one access. The long stairways to the platforms, built around a light shaft, are brightened by two stained-glass windows by Mario Merola and Pierre Osterrath. Stained glass is coloured glass as a material or works created from it. Throughout its thousand-year history, the term has been applied almost exclusively to the windows of churches and other significant religious buildings. Although traditionally made in flat panels and used as windows, the creations of modern stained glass artists also include three-dimensional structures and sculpture. Lachine Canal
The Lachine Canal ( in French (language), French) is a canal passing through the southwestern part of the Island of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, running 14.5 kilometres (9 miles) from the Old Port of Montreal to Lake Saint-Louis, through the boroughs of Lachine (borough), Lachine, LaSalle, Quebec, Lasalle and Le Sud-Ouest, Sud-Ouest. Before the canal construction there was a lake, Lac St. Pierre or or Petit Lac St. Pierre. The lake and its rivers can be seen on the maps of Montreal of the years 1700, 1744 and on the map titled "The isles of Montreal. As they have been surveyed by the French engineers" (1761). Pierre François Xavier De Charlevoix
Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, S.J. ( la, Petrus Franciscus-Xaverius de Charlevoix; 24 or 29 October 1682 – 1 February 1761) was a French Jesuit priest, traveller, and historian, often considered the first historian of New France. He had little interest for "a life of suffering and deprivation for the conversion of Indian souls", but "an eager curiosity concerning life". Pierre Osterrath
Osterrath is the family name of a stained glass workshop operating from Tilff, Belgium beginning in the final part of the 19th century. Their works were in the neo-gothic style of the period and samples or their works can be seen in cathedrals in Liège, Belgium, and in many religious constructions in surrounding cities in Europe. Stained glass panels meant for religious buildings were sent as far as the United States and Canada. Following World War II, the workshop eventually moved to Cowansville, Quebec, Canada and became one of the main suppliers of stained glass panels for churches being built in southern Quebec.
