Charles Ross (English Cricketer)
Charles Hoadley Ashe Ross (22 July 1852 – 5 February 1911) was an English sportsman who played both cricket and tennis, the latter of which was more extensive. Ross was a quarter finalist in singles at the 1886 Wimbledon Championships, and a two time semi finalist in men's doubles in 1885 and 1886. He played competitive tennis from 1884 to 1891, and reached fifteen finals, and won seven titles. Tennis career Ross entered his first tournament at the Sussex County Lawn Tennis Tournament in 1884, and progressed to the final before losing to Charles Lacy Sweet 3–1 in sets. In a period when international travel was difficult, he chose to play at the inaugural Ceylon Championships held at the Hill Club, Nuwara Eliya, British Ceylon where he won the title. Bath, Somerset
Bath () is a city in the Bath and North East Somerset unitary area in the county of Somerset, England, known for and named after its Roman-built baths. At the 2021 Census, the population was 101,557. Bath is in the valley of the River Avon, west of London and southeast of Bristol. The city became a World Heritage Site in 1987, and was later added to the transnational World Heritage Site known as the "Great Spa Towns of Europe" in 2021. British Covered Court Championships
The British Covered Court Championships (BCCC) was an indoor tennis event held from 1885 through 1971 and played in London, England. The dates of the tournament fluctuated between October and March. History For its first five years the tournament was held at the Hyde Park Lawn Tennis Club in Porchester Square, London and consisted only of a men's singles competition. In 1890, when it was decided to add a women's singles and men's doubles competition, the tournament moved to the Queen's Club in London although the men's singles remained at Hyde Park until 1895. The mixed doubles event was added to the championships in 1898. A third court was added to the championships in 1912 and, like the original two courts, it had a wooden surface. In 1923 the Challenge Round system, allowing the champion to skip next year's competition and only play the winner of that competition, was abolished. Edgbaston Open Tournament
The Edgbaston Open Tournament was an early Victorian era men's and women's grass court tennis tournament first staged in June 1881, at the Edgbaston Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club, Edgbaston, Warwickshire, England. This distinct tournament ran until 1908. History Edgbaston Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club founded in 1878 and continued to stage both events the Edgbaston Open Tournament until 1908 and the Midland Counties until November 1964. Priory Lawn Tennis Club founded in 1865 and in May 1963 the Priory Club was destroyed by a fire, talks about merger took place of the coming months with the Edgbaston C.L.T.C. Cambridgeshire Lawn Tennis Tournament
The Cambridgeshire Lawn Tennis Tournament was a tennis tournament first established in 1884 at Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, and played on outdoor grass courts. The tournament was played at until 1892. History Cambridge University Lawn Tennis Club (f.1881) is one of the oldest tennis clubs in the world. The Club acts as the tennis association for whole of the University of Cambridge, representing thirty-one Colleges. In 1884, the Cambridge University LTA established the Cambridgeshire Lawn Tennis Tournament. The tournament was held annually through to 1889, when it was discontinued. In 1890, the Selford Lawn Tennis Club in Great Shelford, was host for the tournament until 1891, when that too was discontinued. The tournament served as the precursor event to the later Cambridgeshire County Lawn Tennis Championships established by the Cambridgeshire LTA in 1906. Felixstowe ( ) is a port town in Suffolk, England. The estimated population in 2017 was 24,521. The Port of Felixstowe is the largest container port in the United Kingdom. The East of England Championships also called the East of England Lawn Tennis Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1885 as the Felixstowe Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. In 1889 the event had by this time become a regional level tournament that ran until 1983 when it lost its status as a senior international tour level event. Herbert Wilberforce
Sir Herbert William Wrangham Wilberforce (8 February 1864 – 28 March 1941) was a British male tennis player. He was vice-president of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club from 1911 to 1921 and served as its president from 1921 to 1936. In 1887, he and Patrick Bowes-Lyon won the doubles in Wimbledon. In 1888 they were unable to defend their title when they were beaten in the Challenge Round by Ernest and William Renshaw. His best singles performance at Wimbledon came in 1886 when he reached the semifinal of the All Comers tournament in which he lost in five sets to compatriot Ernest Lewis. He also reached the quarter-finals of the singles in 1882, 1883 and 1888. Herbert was a brother of physicist Lionel, son of judge Edward, grandson of archdeacon Robert and great-grandson of abolitionist William Wilberforce. John Redfern Deykin
John Redfern Deykin born (27 July 1867 – 30 March 1899) also known as Redfern Deykin or J.R. Deykin was an English tennis player of the late 19th century. In 1884 competed at both the Irish Championships and Wimbledon Championships, then considered two of the most important major tennis events. He was active from 1881 until 1894 and contested 24 career singles finals, and won 11 titles. Career Deykin played his first tennis event in at the 1881 Oxford University Champion Tournament (whilst studying there) losing in the first round. In 1882 he reached the final of the Edgbaston Open Tournament losing to Robert Braddell.
