Henry Harnischfeger (July 10, 1855 – November 15, 1930) was a pioneer in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, mining industry. Early life and career Harnischfeger was born in Salmünster, Kreis Schlüchtern, Hesse-Nassau, on July 10, 1855. He left his homeland in 1872 and came to the United States. He arrived in the U.S. on April 9th, and was employed by Singer Sewing Machine Company, which is now known as the Singer Corporation. He worked there for 9 years, and then came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He then worked for the White Hill Sewing Machine Company where he managed castings patternmaking and gear machining operations within the Whitehill factory with Alonzo Pawling. They formed a machine and pattern shop on December 1, 1884. to manufacture, assemble and service components and equipment needed by other, larger manufacturing firms in the region. Wauwatosa, WI
Wauwatosa (; known informally as Tosa; originally Wau-wau-too-sa or Hart's Mill) is a city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 48,387 at the 2020 census. Wauwatosa is located immediately west of Milwaukee, and is a part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. It is named after the Potawatomi Chief Wauwataesie and the Potawatomi word for firefly. History The lush Menomonee Valley of the Wauwatosa area provided a key overland gateway between the rich glacial farmland of southeastern Wisconsin and the Port of Milwaukee. In 1835, Charles Hart became the first Euro-American to settle here, followed that year by 17 other families. The following year a United States Road was built from Milwaukee through Wauwatosa, eventually reaching Madison. Charles Hart built a mill in 1845 on the Menomonee River which gave the settlement its original name of "Hart's Mill." The mill was torn down in 1914. The Wauwatosa Woman's Club Clubhouse is located in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Wauwatosa Woman's Club The Wauwatosa Woman's Club was founded in 1894. It was incorporated in 1907. The stated purpose of the club was “The social and intellectual development of women through a free interchange of thought, by a course of careful study, essays and discussions.” In 1914 Emerson D. Hoyt donated the lot on 1626 Wauwatosa Avenue for a clubhouse, with the provision that the structure also be used as a museum to preserve the early history of Wauwatosa. Hoyt also stipulated that the woman's club members would need to raise $10,000 within two years' time. The project faltered with onset of World War I, but the women were given an extension and ultimately raise the required amount. The clubhouse become a social center for the women of Wauwatosa. The Cathedral Church of All Saints is the bishop's church of the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. The current parish is a descendant of a small mission by the Right Reverend Jackson Kemper. It is located in Milwaukee's downtown Yankee Hill neighborhood. The Gothic Revival church building was designed by E. Townsend Mix, a noted Milwaukee architect, and constructed as Olivet Congregational Church in 1868. The building was sold to the Episcopal diocese in 1871 when the Olivet congregation faced bankruptcy, and was consecrated as a cathedral in 1898. Incense was first used at All Saints Cathedral on Epiphany, 1902. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. With . Schuster's, officially Ed. Schuster & Co., was a department store chain, founded in 1883, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and it is now defunct. Department store in Milwaukee Schuster's opted for several neighborhood stores over a single downtown location, and Schuster's locations included 2151 N. Third St. (now Martin Luther King Jr. Drive), 12th and Vliet streets and 11th and Mitchell streets, Packard Plaza and Capitol Court. Kirchoff & Rose. designed the Third Street store. Gimbels bought Schuster's in 1962 and operated as Gimbels-Schuster's until 1969. Golda Meir worked at Schuster's after graduating from high school in 1915 and before moving to Palestine in 1921.
