Charles Henry Bryan
Charles Henry Bryan (October 20, 1822 – May 14, 1877) was a politician and jurist in California, who served as an associate justice of the California Supreme Court. Biography Bryan was born on October 20, 1822, in Ellicottville, New York. By 1833, the family moved to Ohio. He was well educated and read law. His father, John A. Bryan, was a United States diplomat, and his brother-in-law, John B. Weller, was a United States Senate, United States Senator and Governor of California. In September 1851, Bryan ran for District Attorney of Yuba County, California, Yuba County against incumbent Jesse O. Goodwin. In June 1852, he was elected a delegate to the state Democratic Party (United States), Democratic convention held in Benicia, California, on July 20, 1852. California Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of California is the highest and final court of appeals in the courts of the U.S. state of California. Benicia, California
Benicia ( , ) is a waterside city in Solano County, California, located in the North Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. It served as the capital of California for nearly thirteen months from 1853 to 1854. The population was 26,997 at the 2010 United States Census. Hugh Murray (judge)
Hugh Campbell Murray (April 22, 1825 – September 18, 1857) was an American lawyer and the third Chief Justice of California. Biography Murray was born in St Louis, Missouri before his family moved to Alton, Illinois when he was a child. Little is known of his schooling except that he almost certainly studied Latin. In 1846 he began studying at the law firm of N.D. Strong in Alton.Whittlesey (1941) p. 365. On March 8, 1847, following the outbreak of the Mexican–American War he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 14th Infantry Regiment. Virginia City is a census-designated place (CDP) that is the county seat of Storey County, Nevada, and the largest community in the county. The 1859 California gubernatorial election was held on September 7, 1859 to elect the governor of California. Since the beginning of the 1850s, issues regarding slavery had effectively split the state Democratic Party. Initially divided by pro-slavery Chivalrists and anti-slavery Free Soilers, by 1857, the party had split into the Lecompton and Anti-Lecompton factions. Lecompton members supported the Kansas Lecompton Constitution, a document explicitly allowing slavery into the territory, while Anti-Lecompton faction members were in opposition to slavery's expansion. The violence between supporting and opposition forces led to the period known as Bleeding Kansas.
