Charles Band (businessman)
Charles Shaw Band, (December 14, 1885 – May 27, 1969) was a Canadian businessperson, art collector, and philanthropist. Born in Thorold, Ontario, Band was educated at Toronto's Upper Canada College. He held executive positions in companies such as Canadian Surety Company, Goderich Elevator and Transit Co. Ltd., Manufacturers Life Insurance, Toronto General Trusts, and Gutta Percha and Rubber Limited. In 1914, he married Helen Huntington Warren whose mother, Sarah Trumbull Van Lennep Warren, was a founder of the Art Gallery of Toronto (now called the Art Gallery of Ontario). Band was friends with members of the Group of Seven, including Lawren Harris and Fred Varley. He was president of the Art Gallery of Ontario from 1945 to 1948 and again from 1964 to 1965. Thorold
Thorold is a city in Ontario, Canada, located on the Niagara Escarpment. It is also the seat of the Regional Municipality of Niagara. The Welland Canal passes through the city, featuring lock 7 and the Twin Flight Locks. History The first survey of Thorold, or Township 9 as it was known then, occurred in 1788. The earliest communities in what is now Thorold emerged at Beaverdams, DeCew Falls and St. Johns but, after the opening of the First Welland Canal in 1829, they were superseded by the new canal villages of Thorold, Allanburg and Port Robinson. In 1846, the community had a population of about 1,000 and there were three churches or chapels and a post office. Various types of tradesmen worked here. Fred Varley
Frederick Horsman Varley (January 2, 1881 – September 8, 1969) was a member of the Canadian Group of Seven. Career Early life Varley was born in Sheffield, England, in 1881, the son of Lucy (Barstow) and Samuel James Smith Varley the 7th. He studied art in Sheffield and attended the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp (1900-1902), Belgium, while he worked on the docks. He immigrated to Canada in 1912 on the advice of another Sheffield native (and future Group of Seven member), Arthur Lismer, and found work at the Grip Ltd. design firm in Toronto, Ontario. Lawren Stewart Harris LL. D. (October 23, 1885 – January 29, 1970) was a Canadian painter, best known as a leading member of the Group of Seven. The Group of Seven, once known as the Algonquin School, was a group of Canadian landscape painters from 1920 to 1933, originally consisting of Franklin Carmichael (1890–1945), Lawren Harris (1885–1970), A. Y. Jackson (1882–1974), Frank Johnston (1888–1949), Arthur Lismer (1885–1969), J. E. H. MacDonald (1873–1932), and Frederick Varley (1881–1969). Later, A. J.
