Charles-Édouard Houde
Charles-Édouard Houde (December 18, 1823 – November 23, 1912) was a merchant and political figure in Quebec. He represented Nicolet in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1876 to 1883 as a Conservative. He was born in Rivière-du-Loup-en-Haut, Lower Canada, the son of Joseph Houde and Rosalie Massé. He established himself in business first in Yamaska and later at Saint-Célestin. Houde was a general merchant, also selling lumber, paper and hay. In 1847, he married Léocadie Therrien. He served as a lands and forests officer, justice of the peace, postmaster and colonization officer. Legislative Assembly Of Quebec
The Legislative Assembly of Quebec (French: ''Assemblée législative du Québec'') was the name of the lower house of Quebec's legislature from 1867 to December 31, 1968, when it was renamed the National Assembly of Quebec. At the same time, the upper house of the legislature, the Legislative Council, was abolished. Both were initially created by the Constitution Act, 1867. It was the Union Nationale government of Premier Jean-Jacques Bertrand that passed the "Bill 90" legislation to abolish the upper house, but earlier attempts had been made by earlier governments. The presiding officer of the Assembly was known in French as ''orateur'', a literal translation of the English term, ''speaker''. When the Assembly was renamed so too was the title of its presiding officer, becoming known as the President. Today, Quebec has a unicameral legislature, whose single house is the National Assembly. Nicolet (provincial Electoral District)
Nicolet was a provincial electoral district in the Montérégie region of Quebec, Canada. It was created for the 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada). It disappeared in the 1973 election and its successor electoral district was Nicolet-Yamaska. Nicolet-Yamaska, in turn, disappeared in the 1981 election and Nicolet reappeared. However, Nicolet's final election was in 1985. It disappeared for good in the 1989 election and its successor electoral district was the re-created Nicolet-Yamaska. It was named in honour of French explorer Jean Nicolet who also worked for the Company of One Hundred Associates in the 17th century. François-Xavier-Ovide Méthot
François-Xavier-Ovide Méthot (September 19, 1843 – October 19, 1908) was a Quebec farmer and political figure. He represented Nicolet in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1871 to 1876 and in the House of Commons of Canada as an Independent Conservative member from 1877 to 1884. He was born in Quebec City in 1843, the son of François-Xavier Méthot, and studied at the Séminaire de Québec. He married his cousin Clara, the daughter of Antoine-Prosper Méthot, in 1864. Méthot was a farmer at Saint-Pierre-les-Becquets and served as mayor there from 1868 to 1872. In 1871, he was elected to the legislative assembly of the province in Nicolet as a Conservative; he was reelected in 1875 but his election was declared invalid by the Quebec Superior Court in June 1876. Louiseville
Louiseville is a town in the Mauricie region of the province of Quebec in Canada. It is located near the mouth of the 'Rivière-du-Loup', on the north shore of Lac Saint-Pierre. Louiseville is twinned with Soissons in France and Cerfontaine in Belgium. History The area was originally part of the la Seignorie Rivière-du-Loup. This seignory was formed in 1665 by Intendant Jean Talon and granted in 1672 to Charles Dugey Rozoy-de-Mannereuil, officer in the Carignan Regiment. The seignory was thereafter also known as Rivière-Mannereuil for some time. In 1714, a mission was formed by the Récollets who dedicated it to the patronage of Anthony of Padua. In 1722, the Ursulines owned the seignory and attempted to change the name to Saint-Antoine-de-la-Rivière-Saint-Jean but the settlement became known as Rivière-du-Loup or Rivière-du-Loup-en-Haut after the seignory or local river. The Conservative Party of Quebec (french: Parti conservateur du Québec) was a political party in Quebec, Canada, from 1867 until 1936, when it merged with members of the Action libérale nationale to form the Union Nationale. Origins The party originated as the '' Parti bleu'' which was formed around 1850. The ''parti bleu'' opposed the anti-clericalism of its rival, the ''parti rouge''. The Province of Lower Canada (french: province du Bas-Canada) was a British colony on the lower Saint Lawrence River and the shores of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence (1791–1841). It covered the southern portion of the current Province of Quebec and the Labrador region of the current Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (until the Labrador region was transferred to Newfoundland in 1809).
