Victory Township is a civil township of Mason County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,406 at the 2020 census. History The township was organized in 1868. It was perhaps named in commemoration of Union victory in the Civil War. Communities *Chapple Corners was an unincorporated community on the Big Sable River. General Hon. John Chapple Norton (2 April 1746 – 19 March 1818) was a British Army officer who served in the American Revolutionary War and who later became a Member of Parliament for Guildford. Early life John Chapple Norton was born on 2 April 1746 to Fletcher Norton, 1st Baron Grantley and Grace Chapple. Military career He joined the British army, becoming a captain in the 19th Foot in 1763. After serving with the regiment in Gibraltar he transferred to the Royal Regiment of Foot in 1769, before being appointed a lieutenant-colonel in the 2nd Foot Guards. He served with the Foot Guards in North America during the War of Independence and was involved in several of the actions there, including leading the attack on Young's House. In 1795 he was rewarded with the colonelcy of the 81st Regiment of Foot and in 1797, he was promoted lieutenant-general and transferred to the colonelcy of the 56th Foot. Thomas William Chapple (February 10, 1853 – 1926) was an Ontario lawyer and political figure. He represented Ontario North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1894 to 1898 as a Liberal member. He was born in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1853, the son of William Chapple, a captain in the British Army. He was educated in London and in Newcastle, Ontario. Robin Howard Chapple (born 11 February 1947) is an Australian politician. From 2001 to 2005 Chapple represented the Mining and Pastoral Region for the Greens. Phoebe Chapple (31 March 1879 – 24 March 1967) was a South Australian medical doctor, decorated for her heroic service in France during World War I. Early life and education Phoebe was born in Adelaide, South Australia, 31 March 1879. She was the youngest daughter of Frederic Chapple and his wife Elizabeth Sarah Chapple, née Hunter (c. 1845 – 19 October 1930), who left England in 1876 to take up the position of headmaster of Prince Alfred College, a prestigious Methodist school for boys in the inner eastern suburbs of the city. Philip Richard Chapple (born 26 November 1966) is an English former professional footballer. Chapple began his career with Cambridge United after coming through the youth teams at Norwich City. He was part of the Us defence which gained consecutive promotions in 1989–90 and 1990–91. He joined Charlton Athletic in 1993 and spent five seasons at The Valley before ending his career at Peterborough United. Murray Ernest Chapple (25 July 1930 – 31 July 1985) was a New Zealand cricketer who played 14 Test matches over 13 years. However, he was largely unsuccessful, with only three fifties and a highest score of 76. Playing career In a first-class career that began when he was 19 and ended when he was 41, he played for Canterbury (1949–50, 1952–53 to 1960–61) and Central Districts (1950–51 to 1951–52, 1962–63 to 1965–66), toured South Africa with the New Zealand teams in 1953–54 and 1961–62, and captained New Zealand in the First Test against England in 1965–66. He came to national prominence in 1952–53 when, after four Plunket Shield seasons in which his highest score was 79, he scored 165 and 88 opening the batting for Canterbury against the touring South Africans.
