Chapman Peak (Antarctica)
Chapman Peak () is a peak, high, in the Maglenik Heights, on the east side of Ellen Glacier and west of Arapya Glacier, northeast of Mount Jumper in the central Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains, Antarctica. It was first mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey from surveys and from U.S. Navy air photos, 1957–59, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Captain John H. Chapman, USAF, who participated in establishing the International Geophysical Year South Pole Station in the 1956–57 season. Maglenik Heights ( bg, Мъгленишки възвишения, ‘Maglenishki Vazvisheniya’ \'m&-gle-nish-ki v&-zvi-'she-ni-ya\) are the heights rising to 2752 mReference Elevation Model of Antarctica. Ellen Glacier
The Ellen Glacier is a glacier in the central Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains of Antarctica. It drains the eastern slopes of Mount Anderson and Long Gables and flows generally southeast for to Barnes Ridge, where it leaves the range and enters the south flowing Rutford Ice Stream. It was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1957–59, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Lieutenant Colonel Cicero J. Ellen of the U.S. Air Force, who was in command of many of the air operations when the South Pole Station was established by air drop in the 1956–57 season. Arapya Glacier
Arapya Glacier ( bg, ледник Арапя, lednik Arapya, ) is the long and wide glacier on the east side of north-central Sentinel Range in Ellsworth Mountains, Antarctica, situated south of Young Glacier. It flows southwards along the west side of Barnes Ridge and east of Chapman Peak and joins Ellen Glacier southwest of Mount Besch. Mount Jumper
Mount Jumper () is a mountain high located east of Mount Viets in the central part of the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica. Debren Pass separates it from the side ridge descending via Evans Peak. The mountain overlooks Ellen Glacier to the north and east, and its tributaries Patton Glacier and Rumyana Glacier to the south and northwest respectively. Mount Jumper was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos from 1957 to 1959, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Major Jesse T. Jumper of the United States Air Force who participated in establishing the South Pole Station in the 1956–57 season. Sentinel Range
The Sentinel Range is a major mountain range situated northward of Minnesota Glacier and forming the northern half of the Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica. The range trends NNW-SSE for about and is 24 to 48 km (15 to 30 mi) wide. Ellsworth Mountains
The Ellsworth Mountains are the highest mountain ranges in Antarctica, forming a long and wide chain of mountains in a north to south configuration on the western margin of the Ronne Ice Shelf in Marie Byrd Land. They are bisected by Minnesota Glacier to form the Sentinel Range to the north and the Heritage Range to the south. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (ACAN or US-ACAN) is an advisory committee of the United States Board on Geographic Names responsible for recommending commemorative names for features in Antarctica. History The committee was established in 1943 as the Special Committee on Antarctic Names (SCAN). It became the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1947. Fred G. Alberts was Secretary of the Committee from 1949 to 1980. By 1959, a structured nomenclature was reached, allowing for further exploration, structured mapping of the region and a unique naming system. A 1990 ACAN gazeeter of Antarctica listed 16,000 names.
