Chanute, Kansas
Chanute () is a city in Neosho County, Kansas, United States. Founded on January 1, 1873, it was named after railroad engineer and aviation pioneer Octave Chanute. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 8,722. Chanute is home of Neosho County Community College. History In 1870 when the Leavenworth, Lawrence & Galveston Rail Road (later the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, now the BNSF Railway) crossed the Missouri, Kansas and Texas line within the limits of Neosho county four rival towns sprang up, in the vicinity of the junction: New Chicago, Chicago Junction, Alliance, and Tioga. Two years of the most bitter animosity ensued until the four were consolidated in 1872, and the name of Chanute given it in honor of Octave Chanute, a railroad civil engineer. Kansas () is a state in the Midwestern United States. Its capital is Topeka, and its largest city is Wichita. Earlton is a city in Neosho County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 60. History Earlton (or Earleton) was founded in 1870. Not much progress in the community was made until about 1876 when a railroad depot was built there. A post office was opened in Earlton (at first called Earleton) in 1871, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1976. Petrolia, Kansas
Petrolia is an unincorporated community in Allen County, Kansas, United States. It is situated along the Neosho River. History In 1910, Petrolia had a money order postoffice, an express office, and was a trading point for the neighborhood. The population that year was 200. Petrolia had a post office from July 1905 until September 1953. Geography Petrolia is located in Sections 31–32, Township 26 south, Range 18 east. Less than a mile from the southern border of Allen County, it is situated west of the Neosho River and to the south of Scatter Creek. Contained entirely within Logan Township, it is about 5 miles south-southwest of Humboldt and 13 miles from Iola (the county seat).
