Channels State Forest
Channels State Forest is a state forest located in Washington and Russell counties, Virginia. The Channels Natural Area Preserve is located within the forest, which protects the Great Channels of Virginia, comprising slot canyons formed within 400-million-year-old sandstone outcroppings. Channels State Forest is owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Forestry. The forest is open to the public for hunting, horseback riding, and hiking; camping and motorized vehicles are prohibited. Some uses require visitors to possess a valid State Forest Use Permit. History On January 2, 1786, Russell County was established from a section of Washington County. L.P. The Channels Natural Area Preserve
The Channels Natural Area Preserve is a Natural Area Preserve located in Washington and Russell counties, Virginia. It was established in April 2008 to protect a number of significant natural communities and habitats, including high-elevation forests, rock outcrops, and cliffs. Its name comes from a cluster of eroded crevices and sandstone boulders located on a portion of the land. A slot canyon is a long, narrow channel or drainageway with sheer rock walls that are typically eroded into either sandstone or other sedimentary rock. A slot canyon has depth-to-width ratios that typically exceed 10:1 over most of its length and can approach 100:1.
