In most telecommunications organizations, a virtual channel is a method of remapping the ''program number'' as used in H.222 Program Association Tables and Program Mapping Tables to a channel number that can be entered via digits on a receiver's remote control. Often, "virtual channels" are implemented in digital television, helping users to find a desired channel easily, or easing the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting in general. The practice of assigning virtual channels is most common in those parts of the world where TV stations were colloquially named after the RF channel they were transmitting on ("Channel 6 Springfield"), as it was common in North America during the analogue TV era. It is part of a twinstick with Ici Radio-Canada Télé outlet CBLFT-DT (channel 25). CBXT-DT (channel 5) is a CBC Television station in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is part of a twinstick with Ici Radio-Canada Télé station CBXFT-DT (channel 11). Both stations share studios at the Edmonton City Centre (across from Churchill Square) in Downtown Edmonton, while CBXT-DT's transmitter is located on Wye Road in Sherwood Park. History The station first went on the air on October 1, 1961 as Edmonton's second television station; the previous CBC affiliate, CFRN (channel 3), switched to the newly established CTV on the same day. CHAU-DT is a French language television station serving as an affiliate of TVA in Carleton-sur-Mer, Quebec, Canada. It broadcasts an analogue signal on VHF channel 5 from a transmitter near Rue de la Montagne in Carleton-sur-Mer. Owned by Télé Inter-Rives, its studios are located on Boulevard Perron/ Route 132 in Carleton-sur-Mer. This station can also be seen on Rogers Cable channel 4 and digital channel 610.
