Changpi Lake
The Changpi Lake () is a lake in Sanxing Township, Yilan County, Taiwan. History The lake used to be cavalry stable area for the Imperial Japanese Army during the Japanese rule of Taiwan. Geography Changpi Lake is located at an altitude of about 190 meters. The major land forms around the land include the subtropical forest that surrounds it. The lake has water all year round but it changes levels according to the seasons. Sanxing Township (), also spelled Sanshing Township, is a rural township in the western part of Yilan County, Taiwan. Geography It has an area of 144.22 km2 and estimate population of 21, 503 people as of 2014. Yilan County, alternately spelled I-lan, is a County (Taiwan), county in northeastern Taiwan, Republic of China. Name The name ''Yilan'' derives from the Taiwanese indigenous peoples, indigenous Kavalan people. Other former names in reference to this area in the Yilan Plain include ''Kabalan'', ''Kavalan'', ''Kavaland'', ''kap-a-lan'', ''Yiland'' and ''Gilan''. Taiwan Under Japanese Rule
The island of Taiwan, together with the Penghu Islands, became a dependency of Japan in 1895, when the Qing dynasty ceded Fujian-Taiwan Province in the Treaty of Shimonoseki after the Japanese victory in the First Sino-Japanese War. The short-lived Republic of Formosa resistance movement was suppressed by Japanese troops and quickly defeated in the Capitulation of Tainan, ending organized resistance to Japanese occupation and inaugurating five decades of Japanese rule over Taiwan.
