Chandler Arena
The Chandler Arena (formerly the Sleeman Sports Centre) is an indoor sports venue, located in the suburb of Chandler, Queensland, Chandler in Brisbane, Queensland. It has seating capacity for 2,700, and hosts netball, basketball, indoor soccer, badminton and volleyball. The Sleeman Centre (Brisbane), Sleeman Sports Complex, of which the Chandler Arena is a part, was purpose-built for the 1982 Commonwealth Games which were staged in Brisbane. Since then the centre has hosted a range of sporting events including the World Masters Games, 1994 World Masters Games and the 2001 Goodwill Games swimming, diving and cycling events. The Sleeman Complex, which includes the Chandler Arena, the Chandler Aquatic Centre, and the Chandler Velodrome, was named after the past Brisbane Lord Mayors, Sir John Beals Chandler and Frank Sleeman. Chandler is an outer south-eastern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Chandler had a population of 1,442 people. Geography Chandler is south-east by road from the Brisbane GPO. The suburb is bounded to the east by Tingalpa Creek () and its southern boundary extends into the Tingalpa Reservoir (). The easternmost point of Chandler is the easternmost point of the City of Brisbane mainland (but the easternmost point of the City as a whole is on Moreton Island considerably further east). World Masters Games
The World Masters Games is an international multi-sport event held every four years which, in terms of competitor numbers, has developed into the largest of its kind. Governed by the International Masters Games Association (IMGA), the World Masters Games is open to sports people of all abilities and most ages – the minimum age criterion ranges between 25 and 35 years depending on the sport. Auckland, New Zealand hosted the event's ninth edition from 21 to 30 April 2017. Anyone can participate in the games so long as they are over the age of 35 though some sports will allow athletes who are younger than that. Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) is a convention centre in Brisbane, Australia. It is located in South Brisbane and occupies most of the block formed by Grey Street, Melbourne Street, Merivale Street, and Glenelg Street. ANZ Championship
The ANZ Championship, also known as the Trans-Tasman Netball League, is a former netball league featuring teams from both Australia and New Zealand. Between 2008 and 2016, it was the top-level league in both countries. The competition was owned and administered by Trans-Tasman Netball League Ltd (TTNL), a joint venture between Netball Australia and Netball New Zealand. NBL Grand Final
The NBL Grand Final is the championship series of the National Basketball League (NBL). The entrants are determined by the victors of the two Semi Finals series, who engage in a best-of-five game series to determine the league champion. The winners of the Grand Final series are awarded the Dr John Raschke Trophy. History Prior to 1986, the NBL Grand Final was decided by a single game. The Adelaide 36ers, also known as the Sixers, are an Australian professional men's basketball team in the National Basketball League (NBL). The 36ers are the only team in the league representing the state of South Australia and are based in the state's capital of Adelaide. The club was originally called the Adelaide City Eagles when they joined the NBL in 1982, but changed their name to the 36ers the following year. The Brisbane Entertainment Centre is a multi-purpose indoor arena located in the Brisbane suburb of Boondall, Queensland, Australia. The centre is managed by ASM Global. The arena has an array of seating plans which facilitate the comfort of its users, subject to performance. Frank Sleeman
Frank Northey Sleeman (4 March 1915 – 1 August 2000) was Lord Mayor of Brisbane from 1976 to 1982. Early life and education Sleeman grew up in Redfern, Sydney. He attended Canterbury Boys' High School. Military service and prisoner of war Sleeman was an army lieutenant at the outbreak of the Second World War. He was captured by the Japanese and spent 3 years and 8 months as a prisoner of war in Jentsuji Prison Camp Japan. After the war, Sleeman settled in Townsville and worked as a salesman for the Australian General Electric Company. He married Norma Robinson on 29 December 1945. Lord Mayor of Brisbane Major Sleeman became Lord Mayor of Brisbane in 1976 after the Labor party leader in the Brisbane City Council, Bryan Walsh, failed to hold his ward. John Beals Chandler
Sir John Beals Chandler (21 February 1887 – 19 January 1962), frequently referred to as J. B. Chandler, was the Lord Mayor of Brisbane from 1940 to 1952, and the Member for the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, representing the electorate of Hamilton from the October 1943 by-election to the 1947 state election, where he chose not to seek re-election.
