Chamberí (Madrid Metro)
Chamberí is a defunct metro station on the Line 1 of the Madrid Metro. Being one of the original 8 metro stops of the Madrid Metro, the station has been closed since 22 May 1966 and has been operating as a museum since 2008. The station is located under the ''Plaza de Chamberí.'' Though defunct, the Line 1 still passes through the station, between Iglesia and Bilbao. History Designed by the architect Antonio Palacios, it was inaugurated on 17 October 1919. It was one of the original eight stations that served Madrid's first metro line. This was the first such project in Spain, and the architect was inspired by the look of the Parisian stations of the time. He managed to mitigate the possible reluctance of the public to use the subway, by using bright, colorful materials in the spaces in contact with travelers, such as hallways, tunnels, passage and platform finishes, extensively using tiles and other white and cobalt blue ceramic pieces. Line 1 (Madrid Metro)
Line 1 of the Madrid Metro is an underground metro line running from Pinar de Chamartín in the north to Valdecarros in the southeast, via Sol. Today it has 33 stations and spans from end to end. The line was the first metro line of the Madrid Metro, and the first metro line built in all of Spain. It originally contained only 8 stops connecting Cuatro Caminos in the north to the city center at Puerta del Sol. Line 1 marks the start of the Madrid Metro with its inauguration on 17 October 1919 and public service beginning 14 days later on 31 October. There have been various extensions to the line since it opened including the most recent northern extension to Pinar de Chamartin on 11 April 2007 and a southern extension on 16 May 2007 to Valdecarros. Antonio Palacios
Antonio Palacios Ramilo (8 January 1874 – 27 October 1945) was a Spanish architect. Distinguished by the monumental eclecticism he left as imprint in many of his projects, he helped define the architectural identity of Madrid in the first half of the 20th century. Biography Born on 8 January 1874 in O Porriño, province of Pontevedra. Palacios moved to Madrid to start his studies as Engineer; he switched to Architecture, and obtained a degree in 1903. A prolific architect, he modernized the image of Madrid with some of the mo.st emblematic buildings of the Spanish capital. He received influence from Secessionist ''modernismo'', but according to Óscar da Rocha Aranda, only as feature within a wider mashup of many eclectic styles, such as Neoplateresque, Neoclassicism and modern US commercial arquitecture.
