Certeza
''Certeza'' (Portuguese for ''certainty'') was a Cape Verdean literary review established in Praia in 1944. Although the paper was less notoriety than its predecessor ''Claridade'' founded in 1936, nevertheless, it was a milestone in Cape Verdean literature. Its director was Eduino Brito Silva, its editor in chief was Joaquim Ribeiro. Its first issue was published in March 1944. It notably featured ''Acêrca da Mulher'', a reflection on the status of women by Orlanda Amarílis. The second edition was published in June 1944. The review was banned by the censor, the third edition was published in January 1945, the text featured Henrique Teixeira de Sousa's "Homens de hoje" ("Men today"). Claridade
''Claridade'' (Portuguese for "light") was a literary review inaugurated in 1936 in the city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde. It was part of a movement of cultural, social, and political emancipations of the Cape Verdean society. The founding contributors were Manuel Lopes, Baltasar Lopes da Silva, who used the poetic pseudonym of Osvaldo Alcântara, and Jorge Barbosa, born in the Islands of São Nicolau, Santiago and São Vicente, respectively. The magazine followed the steps of the Portuguese neorealist writers, and contributed to the building of "Cape Verdeanity", an autonomous cultural identity for the archipelago. Orlanda Amarílis
Orlanda Amarílis Lopes Rodrigues Fernandes Ferreira, known as Orlanda Amarílis (8 October 1924 – 1 February 2014) was a Cape Verdean writer. She is considered to be a noteworthy writer of fiction whose main literary themes include perspectives on women’s writing, with depictions of various aspects of the lives of Cape Verdean women as well as depictions of the Cape Verdean diaspora. She has been described as "indisputably one of Cape Verde’s most talented writers". Biography Orlanda Amarílis was born in Assomada, Santa Catarina, Cape Verde, on 8 October 1924. Amarílis is the daughter of Armando Napoleão Rodrigues Fernandes and Alice Lopes da Silva Fernandes. Henrique Teixeira De Sousa
Henrique Teixeira de Sousa (September 19, 1919 in São Lourenço on the island of Fogo – March 3, 2006) was a doctor and author from Cape Verde. Biography Teixeira de Sousa graduated in 1945 in Lisbon with a degree in Medicine, having attended in the following year the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Porto. He later specialized in nutrition and initially went to East Timor to work as a doctor there. Teixeira de Sousa settled on his natal island of Fogo the following year, where he had an important role in maintaining minimal structures of public health. Later on, he worked on the island of São Vicente, until he emigrated shortly before the independence of the archipelago from Portugal, and moved to Oeiras, Portugal, where he lived until his death in 2006. Manuel Ferreira (18 July 1917 – 17 March 1992) was a Portuguese writer that became known for his work which was centered around african culture and literature. Biography He took commerce and pharmaceutic courses at the lyceums. He graduated in Social Sciences at the Technical University of Lisbon. During his military service, he was mobilized on an expeditionary journey to Cape Verde, in 1941, he was stationed there for six years until 1947. He is known through his famous poems (''mornas''), mostly written in the Creole of Brava.
