Certamen Ciceronianum Arpinas
{{unreferenced, date=December 2016 The Certamen Ciceronianum Arpinas is an international Latin competition for high school seniors which is organised annually in Cicero's birthplace Arpino, situated in southern Lazio. Organisation The event, which is conducted under the tutelage of the Italian president, lasts three days, starting with the traditional commencement ceremony on the second Friday of March, and is organised by the Centro Studi Umanistici Marco Tullio Cicerone. The test takes place in the buildings of thLiceo-Ginnasio Tulliano High school seniors studying classics from all over Europe are free to participate, provided that they pay an inscription fee (although many high schools provide waivers and several governments send students who did well in national championships free of charge). Marcus Tullius Cicero ( ; ; 3 January 106 BC – 7 December 43 BC) was a Roman statesman, lawyer, scholar, philosopher, and academic skeptic, who tried to uphold optimate principles during the political crises that led to the establishment of the Roman Empire. His extensive writings include treatises on rhetoric, philosophy and politics, and he is considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists. Arpino
Arpino ( Southern Latian dialect: ) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the province of Frosinone, in the Latin Valley, region of Lazio in central Italy, about 100 km SE of Rome. Its Roman name was Arpinum. The town produced two consuls of the Roman republic: Gaius Marius and Marcus Tullius Cicero. History The ancient city of Arpinum dates back to at least the 7th century BC. Connected with the Pelasgi, the Volsci and Samnite people, it was captured by the Romans and granted ''civitas sine suffragio'' in 305 BC. The city received voting rights in Roman elections in 188 BC and the status of a ''municipium'' in 90 BC after the Social War. The ''Corriere della Sera'' (; en, "Evening Courier") is an Italian daily newspaper published in Milan with an average daily circulation of 410,242 copies in December 2015. First published on 5 March 1876, ''Corriere della Sera'' is one of Italy's oldest newspapers and is Italy's most read newspaper. Its masthead has remained unchanged since its first edition in 1876. It reached a circulation of over 1 million under editor and co-owner Luigi Albertini, between 1900 and 1925. He was a strong opponent of socialism, of clericalism, and of Prime Minister Giovanni Giolitti who was willing to compromise with those forces.
