Central Prison, Poojappura
Central Prison and Correctional Home, Thiruvananthapuram, also known as "Poojappura Central Jail", or "Central Prison, Poojappura", is a jail in Poojappura in Thiruvananthapuram in the Indian state of Kerala. It was established in1886 as a part of Travancore It is one of three Kerala prisons along with Kannur and Thrissur. These institutions confine convicts sentenced to above 6 months. Indicted suspects are accommodated in central prisons, if nearby jails are overcrowded. History The history of Travancore jails begins in 1862 with three Principal Jails. 1873 Central Jail at Trivandrum was sanctioned and started functioning inside a fort in a building that was used as barracks for the Nayar Brigade. In September 1886 it was transferred and relocated in purpose-built structures in Poojappura. Police station lock-ups were jailing prisoners whose sentences were below one month. Neyyattinkara
Neyyattinkara, is a Municipal Town and a major industrial and commercial hub located at the southern tip of Thiruvananthapuram metropolitan area in Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala State, and also the headquarters of Neyyattinkara Taluk. The town is situated on the banks of Neyyar River, one of the principal rivers in the district and hence its name. Neyyatinkara in Malayalam literally means "the shore of the river Neyyar". Rosamma Punnoose
Rosamma Punnoose (12 May 1913 – 28 December 2013) was an Indian independence activist, politician and lawyer. She was the first person to be sworn in as a member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. She was also the first MLA in India to lose her seat following a court order, and the first person to be elected in the first-ever by-election to the assembly in 1958. Punnoose was also the first pro tem Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Early life Rosamma was born in Kanjirappally, Travancore on 12 May 1913 to a Catholic family, the fourth child of Kanjirapally Karippaparanbil Thomman Cheriyan and Payippadu Punnakkudi Annamma. Ripper Jayanandan
K P "Ripper" Jayanandan (born 1968) is a serial killer from Thrissur (formerly Trichur) who is accused of seven murders committed during a span of 35 robberies, in and around Thrissur Ernakulam border areas. Suryanelli Rape Case
The Suryanelli rape case (also called the Suryanelli sex scandal) refers to a case of kidnapping and subsequent rape of a 16-year-old school girl from Suryanelli, Kerala, India, in 1996. The girl was allegedly lured with the promise of marriage on 16 January 1996 and kidnapped. She was allegedly raped by 37 of the 42 accused persons, over a period of 40 days. The remaining had abetted the crime. After P.J. Vaikom Muhammad Basheer (21 January 1908 – 5 July 1994), popularly referred to as Beypore Sulthan, was a writer of Malayalam literature. He was a writer, humanist, freedom fighter, novelist and short story writer, noted for his path-breaking, down-to-earth style of writing that made him equally popular among literary critics as well as the common man. Nair Brigade
The Nair Brigade was the army of the erstwhile kingdom of Travancore in India. Nairs were a warrior community of the region. The personal bodyguard of the king Marthanda Varma (1706–1758) was also called ''Thiruvithamkoor Nair Pattalam'' (Travancore Nair Army). The Travancore army was officially referred as the Travancore Nair Brigade in 1818. In the early years, only Nairs were admitted into this brigade.
