Central Manitoulin
Central Manitoulin is a township in the Canadian province of Ontario. It is located on Manitoulin Island and in Manitoulin District. Communities The primary community and administrative centre of the township is Mindemoya. Smaller communities include Big Lake, Britainville, Dryden's Corner, Gibraltar, Grimsthorpe, Long Bay, Monument Corner, Old Spring Bay, Perivale, Providence Bay, Sandfield and Spring Bay. Notable locations Ontario has had a few historical claimants, by towns, for housing the province's smallest jail, the main three being: Tweed, Creemore and Coboconk. However, old jailhouses in Providence Bay, Port Dalhousie, Rodney, and ghost town Berens River have proven to be even smaller. The jailhouse in Providence Bay is now a cabin for tourists to stay at. Port Dalhousie
Port Dalhousie is a community in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Known for its waterfront appeal, it is home to the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta and is historically significant as the terminus for the first three (19th century) routes of the Welland Canal, built in 1820, 1845 and 1889. Activities The city's most popular beach, on the shore of Lake Ontario, is located in Port Dalhousie at historic Lakeside Park. Popular activities that take place at the beach are stand up paddle boarding, swimming, kayaking and beach volleyball. The park is home to the Lakeside Park Carousel which was carved by Charles I. D. M'Chigeeng First Nation
M'Chigeeng First Nation, also known as West Bay, is an Ojibwe First Nation band government in the Manitoulin District of Ontario, Canada. The total registered population as of December 2018, was 2623 people, of which their on-reserve population was 939. The First Nation have reserved for themselves the 3094.7 ha M'Chigeeng 22 Indian Reserve located on Manitoulin Island. Governance M'Chigeeng First Nation leadership are elected on a two-year term. Billings, Ontario
Billings is a township in the Canadian province of Ontario, as well as the name of a community within that township. Located in the Manitoulin District, the township had a population of 603 in the Canada 2016 Census. Communities The primary community in the township is Kagawong. There are three smaller communities: Billings, Bowser's Corner, and Pleasant Valley. Kagawong Kagawong's harbour is located on Mudge Bay and is home to the Kagawong Lighthouse, which has been in continuous service since 1888. The name Kagawong means "where mists rise from falling waters" in the Ojibwe language, a reference to the nearby Bridal Veil Falls on the Kagawong River. Canada 2016 Census
The 2016 Canadian census was an enumeration of Canadian residents, which counted a population of 35,151,728, a change from its 2011 population of 33,476,688. The census, conducted by Statistics Canada, was Canada's seventh quinquennial census. The official census day was May 10, 2016. Census web access codes began arriving in the mail on May 2, 2016. The 2016 census marked the reinstatement of the mandatory long-form census, which had been dropped in favour of the voluntary National Household Survey for the 2011 census. With a response rate of 98.4%, this census is said to be the best one ever recorded since the 1666 census of New France. This census was succeeded by Canada's 2021 census. The 2021 Canadian census was a detailed enumeration of the Canadian population with a reference date of May 11, 2021. It follows the 2016 Canadian census, which recorded a population of 35,151,728. The overall response rate was 98%, which is slightly lower than the response rate for the 2016 census. It recorded a population of 36,991,981, a 5.2% increase from 2016. Planning Consultation on census program content was from September 11 to December 8, 2017. The census was conducted by Statistics Canada, and was contactless as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. The agency had considered delaying the census until 2022. About 900 supervisors and 31,000 field enumerators were hired to conduct the door-to-door survey of individuals and households who had not completed the census questionnaire by late May or early June. Lake Manitou
Lake Manitou is the largest lake on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, Canada. With an area of , it is the largest lake on a lake island in the world. It is drained by the Manitou River. There are several small islands in Lake Manitou, such as Roper Island and Bear Island in the very south of the western lobe of the lake, and McCracken's Island in the neck connecting the two lobes, making them islands in a lake on an island in a lake. However, none of the islands are as large as Treasure Island in a neighboring, smaller lake on Manitou Island. Lake Mindemoya
Lake Mindemoya is a lake in Ontario, Canada, located within Manitoulin Island which is the world's largest island in a freshwater lake (Lake Huron). The lake is located near the town of Mindemoya, and it is the third largest on Manitoulin Island. It has a perimeter of 33.5 km (20.8 miles), its marl clay base imparting to a deep blue to light green colour. The lake reaches depths of 21 m (69'), while the average depth is 7.3 m (24'); the surface area is 3,869 ha (9,562 acres). Mindemoya is a moderately fertile lake that favours a warm water fishery; brook and rainbow trout can be caught in the Mindemoya River, which exits the lake on the south side and flows into Providence Bay. A concrete public boat launch is located along Ketchankookem Trail on the east side of the lake. The major fish species include smallmouth bass, walleye, yellow perch, whitefish and northern pike.
