Central Chişinău
Sectorul Centru is one of the five sectors in Chișinău, the capital of Moldova. The local administration is managed by a pretor appointed by the city administration. It governs over a portion of the city of Chișinău itself (central and western parts), and the suburban town of Codru. It is largely populated by Moldovans and Romanians. National History Museum Of Moldova
The National Museum of History of Moldova ( ro, Muzeul Național de Istorie a Moldovei) is a museum in Central Chişinău, Moldova. Overview Over 263,000 exhibits, 165,000 of which belong to the national heritage, are exhibited in the National Museum of History, founded in 1983 on the former Regional Lyceum. It is situated on 121a, 31 August 1989 str., in the historical center of Chişinău. In the museum yard there is the Capitoline Wolf, the copy of the one in Rome. The Monument to Simion Murafa, Alexei Mateevici and Andrei Hodorogea ( ro, Monumentul în memoria eroilor naţionali Simion Murafa, Alexei Mateevici şi Andrei Hodorogea) was a monument in Central Chişinău, Moldova. It existed between 1933 and 1940. Overview The monument was opened in 1933, in the park of the Nativity Cathedral in Central Chişinău. The monument was dedicated to Simeon G. Murafa, Alexei Mateevici, and Andrei Hodorogea. All of them died in August 1917. In the evening of August 20, 1917 some 200 Russian soldiers, with Bolshevist leaders, seized and murdered two of the most conspicuous Moldavian leaders, Andrei Hodorogea and Simeon G. Alley Of Classics, Chișinău
The Alley of Classics ( ro, Aleea Clasicilor) is a sculptural complex located in the Stephen the Great Park in Central Chișinău, Moldova. Overview The alley is decorated on both sides with red granite busts of classic literary figures and political leaders from Moldova. The alley is located between the Ștefan cel Mare boulevard and the bronze bust of Alexander Pushkin, set on a granite column and made by Russian sculptor Alexander Opekushin. The alley was built and received its name in 1958, and became one of the most important tourist attractions in Chișinău. At first there were only twelve sculptures, but after the fall of the Soviet Union the local authorities added busts of Romanian and Moldovan writers and poets that were banned during the Soviet regime. The idea of a sculptural complex was launched by the interwar sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală, who dreamed to create an open-air museum. Triumphal Arch, Chișinău
The Triumphal Arch ( ro, Arcul de Triumf) is a monument situated in Central Chișinău next to the Nativity Cathedral on Piața Marii Adunǎri Naționale nr. 2 and directly opposite Government House. History The Triumphal Arch was built in 1840 by the architect I. Zauschevic and thanks to the governor's of Bessarabia initiative to commemorate the victory of the Russian Empire over the Ottoman Empire during the Russo-Turkish War (1828–29). From its construction to 2011 the monument sheltered at its second level a huge bell of nearly 6.400 kg (400 Puduri). It was smelted with the copper of the cannons captured by the Russian forces from the Ottoman Empire. The bell "clopote–velican" was initially made for the cathedral's belfry but happened to be too big for it. Finally it was installed in this arch, which was designed in purpose. Capitoline Wolf, Chișinău
The Capitoline Wolf ( ro, Lupoaica Capitolină) is a monument in Central Chișinău, Moldova. It is located in front of the National History Museum of Moldova. Overview During the first decades of the 20th century, Kingdom of Italy donated to Kingdom of Romania five copies of the Capitoline Wolf, which were installed in Chişinău (1921), Bucharest (1906), Cluj-Napoca (1921), Târgu Mureş (1924) and Timișoara (1926). In Chişinău, the monument was completed in 1923 and placed in front of Sfatul Țării Palace. In 1940, at the beginning of the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina, the copy from Chişinău was destroyed. In 1990, Romania donated a new copy of Capitoline Wolf to Moldova. This statue was unveiled in front of the National History Museum of Moldova on December 1, 1990. Stephen The Great Monument
The Stephen the Great Monument ( ro, Monumentul lui Ștefan cel Mare) is a prominent monument in Chișinău, Moldova. Description The monument to Stephen the Great was designed by architect Alexandru Plămădeală in 1923. It was erected near the main entrance of the Stephen the Great Park in Central Chișinău. The monument was completed in 1927 and opened on 29 April 1928 (to replace the monument to Alexander II of Russia, destroyed by the Romanian authorities in 1918). The total cost of the monument was 4.000.000 lei. A few days before the 1940 Soviet occupation of Bessarabia and northern Bukovina, the monument was relocated to Vaslui, and its pedestal was blown up. Sfatul Țării Palace
The Sfatul Țării Palace is a building in Chișinău, Moldova. Overview The building is located near Central Chișinău. It served as a meeting place for the Sfatul Țării, the assembly which proclaimed the independence of the Moldavian Democratic Republic in 1917 then union with Romania in 1918. The building was heavily damaged in the Second World War. It is currently home to the Academy of Music, Theatre and Fine Arts.
